Gabby Portela is an experienced communications and marketing specialist, educator and Miami community leader who has been with the School of Communication at Florida International University since 2014.
Currently serving as Program Manager of Academic Support Services at FIU, Gabby oversees adjuncts in Face to Face and online classes, coordinates the Communication Internship Program and the CARTA in D.C. Internship Program, supports the study abroad program, assessment, and leads the Communication Scholarship Committee, in addition to developing and assessing career development and alumni/student networking.
Through her work at FIU, Gabby has also infused important global issues into Miami-Dade Public Schools' Creating Community Change program, and she coordinated logistics and curriculum for the Miami-Dade Youth and Police Community Dialogues sessions, which has enhanced communication links between officers and students. In addition, her Communication Department Lecture Series, Communication Works, has enabled students to interact with community leaders to appreciate the impact of communication.
Earlier in her career, Gabby served as Marketing and Communications Coordinator for Frost Art Museum, overseeing the marketing budget and directing the production of all publicity materials, as well as managing media and press contacts, planning museum catalogs for various exhibitions, and redesigning the museum's website.
Gabby also teaches classes in Public Speaking, International Business Communication, and Internship as an Adjunct Professor at FIU. She has led several study abroad programs to Dubai, Belgium, Hungary, and the Netherlands. She has also held several leadership positions within the Junior League of Miami, planning and facilitating seminars on leadership, teamwork, and communication, supervising the training of new volunteers, coordinating events for prospective members, spearheading community projects, and leading its nominating committee.
Gabby holds an MS in Higher Education Administration from FIU and a BA in Art History from Florida State University.
