Special Welcome Message
Brian Schriner was appointed Dean of the College of Architecture + The Arts in 2009. Upon the integration of the FIU School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the college was renamed to the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) in 2016.
Under Dean Schriner’s leadership — and the hard work of the college’s faculty, professional staff, students, alumni, donors, board members, and partners — CARTA has established a reputation as one of the nation’s most innovative and forward-thinking colleges.
United in our mission to prepare career-ready professionals with global perspectives through applied learning, research, and creative activities; CARTA consists of 4 Schools (School of Architecture, School of Communication, Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media, and the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim School of Music & Performing Arts); 5 academic Departments (Architecture, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Environmental + Urban Design, Art + Art History, and Theatre); 8 research and teaching hubs (School of Architecture Miami Beach Urban Studios, Art + Art History Visual Arts Gallery on Miami Beach, CARTA Mana Wynwood, Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center For The Advancement of Women In Communication, Carole and Phillip Ratcliffe Art + Design Incubator, Steven Cruz Institute for Science, Media + Technology, Lee Caplin Immersive Studio For Altered Reality, and the Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab), and, of course, the FIU Wertheim Marching Band!
We truly are #FIUCARTACreativeForcesAtWork!
In support of CARTA’s mission, Dean Schriner has strategically expanded CARTA’s nationally ranked undergraduate and graduate degree programs to meet the needs of the creative, information, and tech economies of South Florida and beyond. Leveraging the university’s designation as a Preeminent Research Institution in Florida, as a top U.S. Public Institution (Top 50 US News & World Reports), CARTA’s unique composition of academic disciplines, and being located in one of the most vibrant cities in the world, he has added undergraduate and graduate degrees in communication, journalism, media, the visual and performing arts, and design, including establishing the State of Florida’s first Doctor of Design program in the School of Architecture.
Dean Schriner has also doubled the number of the College’s accomplished, world-class teaching and research faculty; incorporated immersive and emerging technologies into CARTA’s studios, labs, performance spaces, classrooms, newsrooms, and degree programs; and grew enrollment by 230% to nearly 4,000 students. Thus, creating more opportunities for CARTA’s motivated and talented students to fulfill their dreams and achieve their goals.
Dean Schriner is most proud of CARTA students’ performance as measured by the Florida Board of Governors. They are consistently among the highest-achieving students in terms of retention, time-to-graduation, and are consistently leading the Florida State University System for employment within the college’s disciplines.
Expanding CARTA’s impacts, its physical footprint on and off-campus, and to better support experiential-learning and the faculty’s teaching and research, Dean Schriner established the School of Architecture’s Miami Beach Urban Studios (MBUS), CARTA Mana Wynwood, Art + Art History’s Miami Beach Visual Arts Gallery, the Lee Caplin Immersive Studio For Altered Reality (i-STAR) on the Biscayne Bay Campus and the Modesto Maidique Campus, and Caplin News with a bureau in Washington, DC.
In support of CARTA’s academic mission and strategic vision, Dean Schriner has made it a college-wide priority to establish signature partnerships that provide students with financial support while enhancing faculty teaching and research. He has established several student-centric working partnerships with local and national partners including, but not limited to, NBCUniversal, MDC Magic, TelevisaUnivision STEP: Student Training + Employment Program, Island TV, and the Carole and Phillip Ratcliffe Foundation.
Dean Schriner has also expanded the College’s financial base by securing nearly $100 million in auxiliary and philanthropic donations to date. These funds directly support CARTA students’ success and the College’s faculty members’ teaching and research. These gifts include the largest philanthropic donations to the FL State University System in support of music, establishing the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim School Music & Performing Arts, and for journalism, establishing the Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media.
