At CARTA, our faculty search process aligns with university-wide guidelines and promotes academic excellence and innovation.

Faculty Search Process

As a state university, we take seriously our responsibility to provide leadership in ensuring equal employment opportunities. These procedures help to further the mission of the University and to ensure the University’s compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.

1. Authorization & Planning (Spring Semester)

  • Request faculty position and funding for the search process.
  • Approval must be obtained from the Dean. 

2. Search Committee Formation

  • Nominate search and screen committee members. 
  • A committee is appointed by the department chair, approved by the Dean. 
  • Submit request for search committee and recruitment plan approval 

3. Complete Required Training & Charge Committee

4. Search Committee Meetings (Fall Semester)

5. Job Posting

  • The position is posted on Careers at FIU for a minimum of 30 days, and relevant academic platforms (e.g., ChronicleVitae, HigherEdJobs). 

6. Application Review

  • The committee evaluates candidates based on qualifications, teaching, research, and service experience. 
  • Long and short lists are developed with clear criteria. 

7. Interviews

  • Interviews are conducted until finalists are identified for recommendation for on campus interviews
  • Finalists are invited for on-campus interviews, which include: 
    • Teaching demo 
    • Research presentation 
    • Meetings with faculty, students, and leadership 

8. Recommendation & Offer

  • Committee recommends finalist to the Chair/Dean.
  • The Dean approves the finalist and the terms and conditions of the offer.

9. Onboarding

  • New faculty completes onboarding with support from HR and Academic Affairs.
  • Orientation includes resources on teaching, research, and university policies.
