This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for an Associate Lighting Designer for our San Diego, CA office. The following locations will also be considered: Irvine, CA; Los Angeles, CA; Seattle, WA. Be involved in projects with our Specialty Services Lighting Design Group and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
This is a full-time position where you would supplement our Lighting Team and provide technical and design support as well as documentation for a large variety of high-quality national and local projects.
Tasks may include basic assistance with the research, design, concept development, lighting layout, and architectural coordination for commercial, healthcare, hotel, civic, stadiums, and educational facilities. Generates accurate and concise documentation regarding assigned aspects of the project.
Your Impact
- Under general supervision, provides technical support for project designers with the production of lighting projects.
- Assist with performing basic professional lighting design work relating to conducting research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, layout, and systems to determine conformance with applicable standards and codes.
- Assist with basic technical assistance on various design, installation, and integration issues relating to creating state of the art lighting design that is innovative and inspiring, developing luminaire and controls specifics, applying day lighting/harvesting, and creating spaces that impact building capabilities, ambiance, safety, and security.
- Assist with generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation and specifications using electronic systems, artistic renderings, drawings, diagrams, illustrations, spreadsheets, and reports.
- Perform lighting calculations, analysis and rendering studies and use results to inform project decisions.
- Document lighting layouts in Revit and/or CADD.
- Assist in lighting mock-ups and design presentations.
- Complete training on assigned tasks.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Lighting Design, Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Interior Design, Theater Production Design or closely related discipline.
- 1 to 3 years of relevant post education experience.
- Familiarity with process and concepts for sustainable lighting strategies, principles, and practices.
- Strong creative skills with an ability to balance lighting aesthetics and client desires with practical concerns.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Basic proficiency with artistic renderings, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.
- Proficiency with discipline-specific design software (i.e., AutoCAD or Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft 365, InDesign or Sketchup and AGI21 or similar lighting software).
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to render using Photoshop or other similar software.
- Working knowledge of energy codes and LEED.
- Prior internship related to the degree of study within the specific discipline.
- Prior work with lighting design or related design firm.
- A member of and/or actively participates in local professional practice organizations.

Compensation
Expected Salary (all locations): $54,700 – $108,200
WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
