At the National Aquarium, our Marketing team focuses on getting the word out about our animals and initiatives, whether through advertising, community access programs, public relations, or other marketing programs. Marketing interns will have the opportunity to focus on one aspect of bringing high-quality programs and experiences to our guests and program participants. The selected interns will have the opportunity to focus on one of the following areas:
Community Programs
- Assist with development and execution of special events and community access programs to strengthen the Aquarium’s connection with the Maryland community.
- Attend community outreach events to promote Aquarium programs and events
Digital Marketing and Web Development
- Assist with maintenance of National Aquarium website and app, including updating existing pages and creating new ones
- Assist with email marketing, including testing emails before deployment and creating monthly reports using Google Analytics and Salesforce Marketing Cloud
- Note: candidates for this position must be able to understand and hand-code basic HTML and CSS, and preferably have experience with web content management systems (SiteCore or WordPress), Sketch, and/or Google Analytics
Graphic Design
- Assist with design of a range of print and digital marketing materials, such as flyers, ads, social media graphics, etc.
- Assist with concept development and arrive at creative solutions that meet the Aquarium’s brand standards and guidelines
- Note: candidates must have working knowledge of Photoshop CS6, Illustrator CS6, and InDesign CS6.
Group Sales
- Assist with the packaging, programming, and execution of group sales, including development of ideas, and attending scouting, tourism, and other community events to promote the National Aquarium
- Conduct research to compare National Aquarium attendance pricing and product offerings to those of similar institutions
Public Relations/Social
- Assist with writing, proofreading, and distributing press materials (i.e. press releases, media advisories, fact sheets, etc.)
- Assist with coordination of media visits to the Aquarium (i.e. escorting film crews, arranging staff interviews, managing photoshoots, etc.)
- Assist with content creation for social media
- Note: must be able to present writing samples upon request
Visual Productions
- Assist with audiovisual digitization, cataloging, and digital asset management: maintaining organization of the National Aquarium’s video library, creating metadata and standardized local vocabularies, digitizing visual assets, and ingesting footage from our 40 years of archival content.
- Assist with editing of archival projects in Adobe Premiere
- Note: must have basic knowledge of non-linear editing software; must be able to climb stairs and lift up to 50 lbs; pursuing a degree in film, television, information science, or related field preferred
Requirements:
- Must be self-motivated and have sharp attention to detail, ability to work independently or as part of a team, possess strong verbal skills, flexible personality, sense of humor, creativity, and the ability to manage multiple projects.
- Must be able to operate within Microsoft Office systems including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, or willing to learn quickly.
- Must complete a minimum of 120 hours of work within the selected term; occasional weekends may be required.
- Preference is given to juniors and seniors.
- Open to undergraduate students pursuing a degree in marketing, communications, public relations, development or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Internships at the National Aquarium provide hands-on and minds-on experiences that add value to any college education. Applying classroom knowledge, interns obtain valuable job experience and establish professional contacts.
College internship positions are available year-round in many departments throughout the Aquarium. The Aquarium makes every effort to match interns to work that complements their studies, interests, and skills. Students may apply for up to two internships per term; if more than two applications are submitted, only the first two will be considered.
