SUMMARY

Richmond Parks and Recreation is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Farmers Market Coordinator. The Coordinator will perform routine duties, as well as oversee all aspects for the operation of the market. The Market Coordinator’s primary objectives are to support vendors, while ensuring compliance with market rules; to promote locally produced foods and products; to encourage both vendor and customer participation; and to ensure the market runs smoothly.

The purpose of the market is to create a sales venue for area farmers, provide opportunity for consumers to purchase quality farm-grown goods, provide a community gathering place, and to promote and stimulate economic development and create traffic in the Downtown area. This person must be available on Saturdays year-round and Tuesday evenings July – September. Other working days and times are flexible. This is a full-time Parks Department position in the Recreation Division.

DUTIES

MARKET COORDINATOR DUTIES

Attend all Advisory Team meetings and markets or make arrangements for any absences as reliability is priority in this position.

Maintain appropriate market records, policies, procedures and reports, including, but not limited to: Finances, Monthly reports to the Advisory Team and Park and Recreation Board (including each market’s number of vendors and estimated customers), SNAP Reporting

Create, compile, and assess statistical information gathered through surveys or analysis 

Coordinate, promote, and administer funding/grant programs to support specialized activities.

Publicize and promote the market and vendors in any way possible to attract market goers and let the community know what is being provided.

Develop and enhance outreach, prepare weekly communication with vendors, and act as ambassador for the market including fielding complaints to the Advisory Team.

Recruit and select vendors including conducting appropriate farm visits.

Select and schedule entertainment and arrange contracts.

Coordinates special activities, such as workshops, demonstrations, etc.

Oversee the Market during market hours: Prepare market site: place barricades in place, arrange for illegally parked cars to be towed, facilitates set-up and breakdown of the market including Market Coordinator booth, site layout, vendor placement, etc, and help to resolve any problems that arise.

Enforce market rules and regulations, including compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local rules and regulations as well as signage requirements.

Serve as the liaison to the Wayne County Health Department, Wayne County Food Council and other groups on behalf of the market.

Collect fees from vendors and prepare deposits.

Operate SNAP double dollars program.

At the end of market operations, remove barricades from the street, facilitate the removal of trash and litter, and other tasks necessary to return the market site to a clean and safe state.

Maintain a clean and attractive marketplace that is safe and welcoming to customers and vendors.

Lead end of season market evaluation and goal setting for the next season.

Follow all purchasing and respective policies and procedures set forth by the City of Richmond and the Richmond Parks and Recreation Department.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT DUTIES

Work closely with other Recreation Staff to provide activities and events for the Richmond Community.

Attend functions that will promote Richmond Parks and Recreation and the Market positively and garner support.

Provide and enhance momentum to bring pride to Richmond Parks through our social media outreach and marketing efforts.

Sustain and build relationships with outside organizations, volunteer groups and donors.

Prepare plans for funding and development strategies as necessary for the market.

Assist in creating the recreation guide for the Recreation Division.

Assist in media relations and other press related materials as necessary.

Assist in recruitment and retention of seasonal staff, interns and volunteers.

May include work related to the broader vision of the Park Department, and other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Required:

Bachelor’s Degree in related field

Preferred

Previous experience in organizing large-scale events, workshops, or meetings.

Requested:

Passion for local food access and enthusiastic advocate of local farming and local farm products.

Understanding of the multiple challenges confronting small farmers.

Strong supervisory, management, administrative and writing skills.

Ability to work independently and problem solve as well as the ability to work with committees as part of a team.

Ability to organize information and events and handle confidential data with professional discretion.

Knowledge of popular social media platforms, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office.

Ability to work on evenings and weekends as necessary and to travel to vendors.

Must possess a valid State driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment.

Must NOT be a vendor with the Richmond Farmers Market.

Excellent people skills: friendly, outgoing, tactful, strong ability to communicate including listening and exercising diplomatic conflict resolution.

RESPONSIBILITY AND SUPERVISION

Incumbent reports directly to the Park Superintendent.

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS

This position requires communication with the Community Recreation Coordinator, staff within the Parks Office, market vendors, the Advisory Team, Richmond City government officials, community members, interns/volunteers and business owners.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbent performs majority of duties in a standard office environment, involving sitting for long periods, standing/walking at will, lifting/carrying objects weighing 25-50 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, close/far vision, color/depth perception, speaking clearly, hearing sounds/communication and handling/grasping objects. 

This position also requires the ability to listen to others, observe, read text/information, and comprehend instruction. It demands the physical ability to move about the Richmond parks in various environmental conditions (heat, sun, cold, rain, etc.). While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be standing a lot, walking, moving barricades, helping vendors with their displays, tents etc.

WORKING CONDITIONS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

Incumbent may work with or be exposed to irate/hostile individuals. Incumbent frequently works extended, evening and/or weekend hours and occasionally travels out of town for conferences/seminars, sometimes overnight. Incumbent occasionally responds to emergency situations as needed. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to ensure safety of the public and staff.
