Newsweek’s video department is looking for an enthusiastic video fellow who loves video editing, video production and wants to get more hands-on experience in a buzzing newsroom creating videos for the web, including our website and social media channels and thrives in an ever-changing environment.
The Newsweek video fellowship is a five-month education-focused position that includes learning the ways to find, produce and edit different types of digital videos, whether they are a viral clip, reactions to a trending topic or a text-on-screen short news video, primarily for our articles on our website, and also for our social media channels. You will learn the whole production process, from research and finding breaking news stories and videos, submitting ideas to writing scripts, editing and exporting.
If you’re looking at being a Newsweek fellow, then you are someone who really understands what’s going on in the world (especially political, social and trending issues), really interested in finding viral, unique stories across social media and collaborating with your teammates and others around you.
Newsweek is based in New York but this fellowship is remote and candidates can be based anywhere in the U.S.
You will gain experience in:
- Understanding Newsweek’s video production processes, including researching, writing, editing and producing short, compelling news videos for Newsweek articles
- Working with senior producers to create videos in various formats to live on Newsweek, YouTube, Instagram and other social media platforms
- Working within the fast paced news cycle and with video and editorial content management systems
- Building and managing audience and brand awareness
- Pitching ideas everyday for videos that match article topics and being creative in editing those videos
Required Qualifications:
- A strong interest in and knowledge of trending news, including politics, social issues, pop culture, etc. (gaming is a plus)
- A huge appetite for video editing, post production and storytelling
- At least 1 year of basic proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud’s Premiere
- Ability to work creatively, resourcefully and independently in a small team
- Must have knowledge of at least one social media platform (YouTube is huge plus)
- Able to follow directions and work well under pressure and tight deadlines
- Must be able to work collaboratively with different teams across newsroom
- Awareness of video and editorial content management systems
- Proficiency with After Effects is a plus
- Proven experience of motion graphics, Photoshop is a huge plus
Video fellows earn $15 an hour.
