Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. The Opportunity
WSDOT has an exciting opportunity for an accomplished communications professional who is motivated by the opportunity to represent the agency and take the lead on outreach programs for the high-profile SR 520/I-5 Express Lanes Connection Project and the SR 520 Montlake Project, which receive constant attention from the media and the public. This position will be responsible for independently developing and leading internal and external construction communication strategies, including long- and short-term communication plans to inform the public, stakeholders, elected officials, and executives of construction progress, noticeable construction impacts and upcoming construction work.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Communications Lead will:
- Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with diverse agency colleagues, external stakeholders, neighbors, the public and news media.
- Lead community relations, meetings and presentations to communicate construction schedules, milestones and challenges for projects.
- Provide transportation and emergency information to WSDOT staff, local communities, neighborhoods, businesses, elected officials, project partners and the general public via various media outlets, web, email and telephone.
- Research, write, edit, produce, and distribute newsletters, brochures, media releases, websites, briefing papers, correspondence, mass mailings, stakeholder lists, online and in-person presentations and other communication tools as needed.
- Edit and maintain agency webpages, ensuring appropriate and consistent formatting, content, style, language and messaging with official agency standards.
- Be available outside of typical work hours to occasionally respond to emergencies or staff public meetings and briefings.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or related field AND three years of writing, editing or translating experience or equivalent education and experience.
- Strong writing and editing abilities, ensuring the accuracy and quality of public materials.
- Ability to work under pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work with tight deadlines, multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly and effectively for diverse internal and external groups.
- Experience writing communication plans, implementing outreach strategies, writing news releases and other communication designed for external audiences.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Ability to develop and follow emergency protocols.
- Previous experience working within the transportation, journalism or customer service industry.
- Experience working with various public agencies.
- Experience with Adobe graphic programs, such as illustrate and InDesign.
