Program Duration: May 31, 2022 – August 19, 2022
INTERN WILL LEARN AND BE EXPOSED TO:
On-the-job-training to get familiar with the best practices of modern coding processes and standards, including but not limited to:
- Mentoring from NPR’s Digital Media technology team
- Agile Methodology (Scrum) experience.
- Unique insights into NPR’s products, technologies and software systems. Valuable experience with award-winning and highly popular digital products that can help participants stand out for future full-time employment
- Experience with web technology that will be applicable to future full-time web development opportunities, including, but not limited to: React, Redux, PHP, MySQL, CodeFresh, Git, Kubernetes, AWS
Each day you will work with a cross-functional team of brilliant professionals combining business, design/user experience and engineering expertise, working relentlessly to push the boundaries of what’s possible, paving the road for the future of news and entertainment media.
INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop features for NPR.org
- Provide critical support for NPR.orgs’s external users
- Assist with quality assurance (testing, test plans)
- Scope and plan development of features, maintenance work and time sensitive production issues
- Participate and run scrum ceremonies
- Provide meaningful feedback on UI/UX designs
WHO CAN APPLY?
- LOCATION: This internship has the flexibility to be onsite at our DC office, fully remote, and/or a hybrid version of the two based on the intern’s preference. Note: Due to the nature of the pandemic, there have been restrictions on onsite work. Although we hope that restrictions on onsite work will have been lifted by the time this internship starts, there is still a possibility that they will be active, in which case, this internship will be fully remote.
- EDUCATION: Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Our best internship candidates are passionate about digital product development, eager to discover creative solutions to technical challenges, and curious about the world in general. You should be good at managing your time and deadlines, communicating in all ways digital and non, and working accurately – both on your own and with others on our team.
Additionally, we are looking for:
- An undergraduate, graduate, or recent graduate (within 12 months) of a college, university, or bootcamp
- Experience with at least one programming language and/or some experience with web development
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
PREFERRED SKILLS
Bonus points for familiarity with some of our more common technologies and frameworks:
- Any experience with front-end web development, or specifically, experience with:
- JavaScript
- Typescript
- React/Redux
- Any backend web development experience, or experience with PHP
- MySQL (or any database experience)
- HTML5
- CSS3
- Linux
- Git (or any version control system)
SCHEDULE
This internship assumes a full time (40 hours per week) schedule, but we are open to working with the intern to provide flexibility outside of the core hours of 10:30am – 3pm. The core hours are when most important meetings are held and when Web team will be around to provide support and guidance.
