PeaceTech Lab is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization affiliated with the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) in Washington, DC. PeaceTech Lab works with activists and partner organizations to accelerate and scale peacebuilding efforts through the use of technology, media, and data. From helping activists in India develop apps to combat gender violence, to organizing a radio drama program in South Sudan that counters hate speech, and using data analytics to assess COVID-19-related violence, PeaceTech Lab strives to reduce violent conflict and build peaceful communities around the world.  

Mis/Dis-Information Program Intern: 

PeaceTech Lab’s work surrounding Mis/Dis-Information involves policy advocacy for and practical implementation of an Intergovernmental Panel for the Information Environment (IPIE): an international scientific body modeled after the IPCC with the goal of producing regular scientific assessments on the state of the information environment, the effects of mis/dis-information on economies, societies, and individuals, and potential solutions to this crisis. The Mis/Dis-Information Program Intern will play a vital role in PeaceTech Lab’s efforts to create the IPIE by conducting research and supporting engagements with key stakeholders from the policy, diplomatic, scientific, tech, and philanthropic communities. Details: This internship will begin in January 2022 and will continue through May 2022 with the possibility of extension into the summer contingent upon performance and organizational needs. This position requires a commitment of approximately 15 hrs per week. This position is paid at $15/hr and may be done remotely or in-person at PeaceTech Lab, located on the U.S. Institute of Peace campus in Washington, DC.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Mis/Dis-Information Programs Intern will:

  • Produce weekly briefings on the “misinformation ecosystem” by summarizing news events, research projects, policy proposals, etc. related to misinformation.
  • Create in-depth research briefs on international organizations such as the IPCC to discern best practices and lessons learned regarding the creation of an IPIE.
  • Conduct research into potential key stakeholders from the policy, diplomatic, scientific, tech, and philanthropic communities and create topical biographies for such individuals.
  • Support meetings between PeaceTech Lab’s CEO and high-profile stakeholders by preparing briefing materials, talking points, and biographies.
  • Help coordinate logistics for high-level meetings and conferences related to this initiative. 
  • Compile scientific research and literature reviews from international experts working on mis/dis-information and begin developing a database of scientists and research on the subject.

 

Desired Qualifications: 

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be an undergraduate or graduate student studying international relations, political science, history, journalism, or a similar field, with a particular interest in candidates with prior experience studying, researching, or working on mis/dis-information and/or international organizations. 
  • Have an interest in learning more about mis/dis-information and the UN ecosystem. 
  • Have a passion for international affairs, conflict resolution, and international organizations. 
  • Have experience in conducting outreach and superb professional communication skills.
  • Have experience in event planning including: compiling schedules and briefing materials, preparing logistics for events and formal meetings, and coordinating live virtual meetings.
  • Have a passion for using technology, data analytics, and media tools to advance social justice and peacebuilding efforts.
