Are you the kind of person who can’t resist crushing basil between your fingers to release the scent? Do you go to dinner in large groups in hopes you can try a little off everyone’s plate? Do you want to know what makes a chef tick, where an ingredient is sourced or why sugar just happens to be so good on a Korean corn dog?
Readers of The Herald-Times, part of the USA Today Network, want to know these things and so much more. Recently written up in Forbes as an “unlikely epicenter of eclectic global cuisine,” Bloomington, Indiana, is a foodie heaven. Indiana University’s presence in our community brings a diversity of culture. Bloomington restaurateurs offer vibrant, creative menus, and our community is home to more than 300 dining establishments.
We are seeking a reporter who thrives on the dining scene and loves being the first to know about openings, closings and trends in the food and restaurant world. From diving into restaurant inspections to being invited to every soft opening, we are looking for a reporter whose world revolves around the tastes, smells and shared experiences of food.
The successful candidate will cover this scene in a variety of ways, potentially including a column that’s written with voice, enterprise stories and via other media such as video and podcast.
In addition to our incredible restaurant scene, Bloomington offers culture, entertainment, hiking, boating, nightlife and so much more. If you’re new in your career, the H-T is a place where you can grow, learn and advance in Gannett. If you love food and Bloomington already, this could be your chance to get paid to do something you enjoy: Eat!
Here’s what we’re looking for:
- Social media expertise.
- Ability to tell stories in imaginative ways while maintaining consistency in the quality of copy, including good grammar.
- Ability to consistently produce content in a deadline-driven, dynamic environment.
- Good time management and ability to meet deadlines.
- A bachelor’s degree and at least a year of journalism experience (student media and internships count!) OR experience in the restaurant industry and excellent writing skills.
- A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Employment is contingent on passing a background check and drug screen.
To apply, create a single file with a cover letter on why you’re a great fit for this role, your resume and 3-5 examples of your best writing and upload it as a PDF.
