The American Bar Foundation (ABF) invites applications for a creative, enthusiastic, and driven communications professional to add to its communications staff.  

 

About the ABF 

Located in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood, the American Bar Foundation is a nonprofit, independent international research institute committed to empirical, interdisciplinary research on law, legal institutions, and legal processes. The ABF offers a rich intellectual community of scholars with expertise in a wide range of disciplines, and staff members have ample opportunities to interact with both in-residence and visiting scholars and attend pertinent research presentations on both current and historical socio-legal topics, such as our long-standing weekly Wednesday seminar series hosted by leaders in their respective fields. Our varied academic community ranges from leading scholars and emerging researchers in their fields along with next-generation scholars from our competitive fellowship programs.   

 

About This Position 

As a member of a three-person Communications team, the Digital Media Specialist will assist in creating and disseminating content to news media, donors and other funders, the academic community, and other stakeholders. This professional will help tell the story of the American Bar Foundation and the relevant and timely research we are producing. This role will delve into all things digital: social media, our new and exciting podcast, e-newsletters, graphic design, video content and more. The Specialist reports to the Communications Manager and will work cooperatively with members of the communications, development, and academic affairs staff and take direction from senior management. Primary Responsibilities 

Website management  

  • Update ABF website content including publications, news updates, and events 
  • Edit website design elements and be proficient with back-end of the WordPress site 

 

E-newsletter management 

  • Develop, coordinate, and launch mass email communications 
  • Refine and tailor ABF email audiences for mass communications 

 

Social media 

  • Create, coordinate, and execute social media strategy 
  • Post daily and schedule content for ABF social media including flagship Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram accounts; podcast account (s); collaborating with ABF Fellows team to support Fellows social media account 
  • Assist with creation and monitoring of social media ads 

 

Digital content and assets 

  • Produce and edit ABF podcast Whose Law is it Anyway? 
  • Create, develop, and update ABF’s digital media and graphic content 
  • Assist in videography and photography 
  • Contribute to the creation of video content and photo editing 

 

Other 

  • Assist in planning and managing special events to highlight ABF research, book launches, conferences, etc. 
  • Assist in editing and reviewing large publications such as the ABF Annual Report 
  • Collaborate with Communications, Fellows and Development teams to support brand advertising campaigns, programs, and initiatives 
  • Other communications-related duties as assigned 

 

Work Environment 

This job operates in a professional office environment, with some days working remotely and some days reporting to the office. All employees reporting to the ABF office must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including receiving a booster shot, if eligible. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. 

 

Physical Demands 

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open cabinets, and bend or stand as necessary. 

 

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work 

This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a 1-hour lunch period. Occasional work outside of these hours is expected in connection with ABF events.  

 

Salary and Benefits 

Salary starts at $46,000. Qualifications

Required Education, Skills, and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree required 
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills 
  • Ability to master and translate complex research projects and programs to lay audiences 
  • Ability to quickly comprehend a wide range of academic or technical information and synthesize it for a general audience 
  • Experience writing and developing content for newsletters, social media, websites, and other channels 
  • Graphic and publication design experience (Adobe CC, Photoshop, InDesign, Canva, etc.); 
  • Strong attention to detail 
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and to meet deadlines 
  • Strong contributor in team environments and able to collaborate successfully with faculty and staff 
  • Intellectually curious and creative thinker 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite: Word, PowerPoint, Excel 
  • Must be reliable and punctual and understand standard operating office procedures 
  • Must reside in Illinois and maintain U.S. work authorization throughout employment 

 

Desired Skills 

  • Basic video editing experience (Filmora, Premiere Pro, etc.) 
  • Sound editing, especially for podcast production 
  • Experience with web design, especially WordPress, HTML, CSS 
  • Proficiency in AP-style writing 
  • Proficiency with mass marketing/CRMs: Constant Contact, Hootsuite, Meltwater, etc. 
  • Experience using Google Analytics
