As Ecology’s Central Region Communications Manager, you will be an important voice in our agency’s efforts to protect Washington’s environment, clean up toxic contamination and restore our state’s natural beauty, and protect public health. From wildfire smoke to water supplies, the staff of Ecology’s Central Region deals with urgent, complex environmental issues. In this position, you will play a key role in helping residents understand and get involved in these issues, and providing them with the information they need to protect themselves and their families. You will take the lead in managing issues from the Canadian border to the Oregon state line. This is a position where you can make a difference for your community and your state.
This opportunity is ideal for a communications professional who is experienced working with the news media, desires to work on high-profile projects, and is a storyteller on digital platforms. The position is an opportunity to work on a number of environmental priorities for our state, including climate change, air quality, water supplies, environmental justice and more.
During Healthy Washington Roadmap to Recovery, employees are working a combination of in-office and/or telework based on position and business need. Ecology is following current state guidance regarding building occupancy, mask requirements, health screening questions before entry, and social distancing.

Duties
What makes this role unique?
The Central Region Communications Manager takes the lead in managing issues from the Canadian border to the Oregon state line. This is a position where you can make a difference for your community and your state.
What you will do:
- Set communications strategy for major regional projects and initiatives.
- Respond and provide information to members of the media.
- Build connections and invest in outreach to media serving the region’s underrepresented cultural and ethnic residents.
- Make public presentations and assist with public meetings.
- Prepare agency staff and leadership for public presentations, testimony, media interviews and speaking opportunities.
- Develop communications, outreach, and public education materials.
- Continually improve web content to align with agency and federal Title Vi compliance best practices.
- Manage agency social media accounts.

Qualifications
This is an In Training opportunity: The goal class for this position is a Communications Consultant 5 (CC5). We will consider applicants who meet the requirements for both the CC4 and CC5 levels. If the finalist meets the requirements at the CC4 level, they will be hired as a CC4 and will be placed in a training program to become a CC5 within a specified period of time.
At the Communications Consultant 4 level: Range 56 ($4,777 – $6,260 monthly)
Seven (7) years of experience and/or education.
Experience: which may include, but not limited to, journalism, public relations/information, news media, digital/social media, marketing, digital accessibility or writing/editing.
Education: in journalism, communications, public relations, news media, digital/social media, English, marketing, humanities, or closely allied field.
All experience and education combinations that meet the requirements for this position:
At the Communications Consultant 5 level: Range 62 ($5,535 – $7,261 monthly)
Eight (8) years of experience and/or education.
Experience: which may include, but not limited to, journalism, public relations/information, news media, digital/social media, marketing, digital accessibility or writing/editing.
Education: in journalism, communications, public relations, news media, digital/social media, English, marketing, humanities, or closely allied field.
All experience and education combinations that meet the requirements for this position:
