About the team
The Global Impact Group (GIG) leads IHME’s pursuit to improve health policy and practice through cutting-edge communication and collaboration. GIG runs campaigns to build awareness of the most critical health challenges, and work with decision-makers to take informed action. Within GIG, the Global Campaigns team works with media and social media, creating compelling content to help IHME advance policy windows by furnishing evidence in the right format, at the right time, and to the right stakeholders, to inform decision-making.
About the role
IHME has an outstanding opportunity for a Media Relations Officer. The primary purpose of this position will be to work in close collaboration with senior leaders to implement IHME’s communications strategy and lead targeted outreach efforts to build impact from IHME research among audiences globally. This requires strategic cultivation and sustaining open channels with a wide range of media covering local, national, and international topics of interest as a critical pathway to reach varied audiences including government decision-makers, nonprofit organizations, health service organizations, and donors. The Media Relations Officer is responsible for proactively identifying, creating, and disseminating high-quality stories that demonstrate the policy-relevance of IHME’s results and methods in clear and compelling ways. In collaboration with an agile team, they must execute strategies for media outreach and uptake, as well as use analytics to measure and analyze the impact of that outreach and update. This position is contingent upon project funding availability.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Relationship management
- Strategically manage and expand IHME’s network of media contacts, key opinion leaders, policymakers, and other stakeholders; identify and lead opportunities to strengthen relationships with external media stakeholders, in order to disseminate IHME’s evidence-based research effectively and seek to influence global health policy and impact.
- Field and obtain answers to inquiries and requests from journalists for findings and interviews with experts in IHME’s research network.
- Communicate collaboratively and effectively with other members of the IHME’s Global Impact Group, as well as other faculty and staff, key communications staff at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and other stakeholders to engage IHME’s growing research network in working with the media to explain research findings.
- Recognize, process, and address crisis situations that would affect IHME’s reputation and brand.
Writing and outreach
- Research and write content for all outreach products, which include messaging briefs, fact sheets, press releases, media pitches, and infographics, and collaborate closely on social media-related content.
- Develop and maintain a calendar of media outreach opportunities.
- Work with faculty and staff to transform complex research into compelling and policy-relevant messages that are comprehensible to targeted non-scientific audiences.
- Present summaries of research, implications, and opportunities to multiple audiences, including audiences from local government and donors.
- In all avenues, communicate to diverse audiences in a language and manner that connects with their interests while explaining in clear terms IHME’s work and mission.
Knowledge command
- Develop in-depth familiarity with media organizations and journalists around the world, including their political and cultural contexts.
- Regularly review the landscape of international media coverage on a range of health and global development topics and identify ways for IHME’s work to be woven into the global dialogue.
- Present summaries of research, implications, and opportunities to multiple audiences, including audiences from local government and donors.
Other
- Take on other duties as part of the overall Global Impact Group as needed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field plus three years of experience in a role or roles
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

- Excellent communications skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to take technical and highly scientific research and make it relevant, clear, and concise for the general public.
- Aptitude for public speaking before large and small audiences.
- Creative and strategic thinking.
- Ability to manage multiple workstreams and numerous stakeholders simultaneously, setting and shifting priorities as needed.
- Professional maturity, with an ability to work both independently and collaboratively to achieve objectives.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-based structure with excellent interpersonal skills that foster productive relationships with colleagues and the Institute’s third-party service providers.
- Strong understanding of multimedia assets as promotional tools.
- Experience in handling crisis communications.

DESIRED:
- Substantive knowledge of public health research and policy, data science, and other related research fields.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This position leads a global team and works with a global network of stakeholders; as such evening and weekend work may be required to fulfill job duties.
- Travel may be required up to 20% of the year, both domestic and international.
- Office is located in Seattle, Washington. This position is eligible to work fully remote in the US. Valid passport or the ability to obtain one is required.
