The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) based at the University of Maryland College Park is currently seeking to hire a full-time Communications and Transition Manager. START supports research that applies the theories and methods of social science to the study of the human causes and consequences of terrorism and is now expanding its portfolio to the study of irregular warfare. A critical component of START’s mission is transitioning research findings to policymakers, practitioners, journalists, and the public. START is part of the University’s College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.

Responsibilities:

The Communications and Transition Manager is responsible for designing and implementing strategies for communicating about START research, education, and training to a variety of audiences, including federal and other funders and end-users of START products, members of the media, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least five years’ experience in communications or media relations
  • Proven success designing and executing communications, marketing, and/or public relations campaigns
  • In-depth knowledge of best writing and messaging practices across multiple platforms
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and re-prioritize as needed
  • Prior supervisory experience
  • Experience with Drupal or similar content management systems

Preferences:

  • Formal training (degree, certification, coursework) in communications, journalism, public relations, or related
  • At least eight years’ experience in communications or media relations
  • Experience in research communication
  • Experience with maintaining and developing content for websites
  • Experience coordinating with technical personnel and/or vendors on issues related to website design and functionality
  • Familiarity with 508 compliance
  • Experience in event planning, including virtual events
  • Proficiency with design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience with media management systems, including Cision, Hootsuite and Mailchimp
  • Familiarity with national security issues
The annual salary for this position will be in the range of $69,000 to $85,000 (depending on education and experience), plus full University of Maryland benefits (as explained at http://ter.ps/2by). This is a regular exempt staff position reporting directly to START’s Director. The successful candidate will work on-site at START’s offices. START is located less than two miles from the University of Maryland campus. This position is eligible for telework up to two days per week.

While performing essential functions of this position, the employee operates a computer and other office devices, such as telephones and copy machines. This position requires the employee to frequently communicate and exchange accurate information via telephone and email. This position requires occasional lifting of materials up to 25 pounds. This position requires movement around the office and to locations on the University of Maryland campus.
