Letter from Chair Teresa Ponte

Welcome to FIU and to the Department of Journalism + Media!

The Department of Journalism + Media in the School of Communication + Journalism at Florida International University is a unique program located amid the amazing vibrancy and diversity of South Florida. This booming news and media area is home to national and international news organizations, broadcasting companies and new media and digital innovators. In this whirlwind of journalism, communication, and production, the Department of Journalism + Media strives to provide a learning environment combining a solid base of critical thinking and theory with hands-on skills and a spirit of experimentation that will prepare and serve our students for the constantly evolving professional landscape.

The department offers two undergraduate and one graduate degrees. A Bachelor of Science in Communication with tracks in Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, and a Bachelor of Science in Digital Communication and Media (STEM). The Master of Science is the first Spanish Language Journalism Master’s Program in the country.

Faculty include award-winning practitioners and scholars committed to mentoring students and developing the next generations of journalists and storytellers. The deep sense of collaboration among our faculty extends to collaboration with students in an enriching partnership for both. Many accomplished alumni have gone on to successful careers in their field.

Students, we urge you to take advantage of all that the Department of Journalism + Media has to offer. A caring and encouraging team of faculty, advisors and staff; the opportunity to intern with the most accomplished professionals in the field; international experiences through our study abroad programs; experiential learning opportunities with the South Florida News Service, with the Sea Level Rise projects, the Virtual Reality Journalism Lab; coaching through the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communications, and so much more. This is your moment.

I look forward to getting to know you better,

Teresa Ponte, J.D., M.A.
