The Department of Journalism + Media in the School of Communication + Journalism at Florida International University is a unique program located amid the amazing vibrancy and diversity of South Florida. This booming news and media area is home to national and international news organizations, broadcasting companies and new media and digital innovators. In this whirlwind of journalism, communication, and production, the Department of Journalism + Media strives to provide a learning environment combining a solid base of critical thinking and theory with hands-on skills and a spirit of experimentation that will prepare and serve our students for the constantly evolving professional landscape.
The department offers undergraduate students a new digital curriculum to meet the demands of an increasingly technological world. The updated Bachelor of Science in Digital Communication and Media STEM degree now offers four technically innovative majors: Digital Journalism, Digital Broadcasting, Digital + Interactive Media and Digital TV + Multimedia Production. With courses in motion graphics, digital theories, web production, multimedia production, and digital audio and social media, J+M students can be sure to graduate ready for a 21st-century career in journalism and media.
Graduate students in the Department of Journalism + Media can enjoy being part of a one-of-a-kind Spanish language program that also allows students bi-lingual students the flexibility to complete partial course-work in English. The Spanish Language Journalism Master’s program offers two concentrations, Multimedia Journalism and Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and a 4+1 application pathway.
And we are not stopping there. As our program continues to grow so do our aspirations to offer an ever-increasing dynamic and enriching college experience. In the coming semesters look for new academic track offerings in sports and photojournalism, a new Master of Science in Digital Communication and Media degree, as well as many more student engagement initiatives and professional development partnerships.
