The School of Communication + Journalism at FIU offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate courses focused on providing skills and aptitudes to succeed in today’s expanding world of media, including web-based, interactive and digital communications — through broad and highly technical and field-specialized content that evolves as rapidly as the media. Our teachings blend traditional best practices and ethical foundations with relevant skills and hands-on experiences needed to produce global communicators and media revolutionaries in the 21st century.

Upon graduation, students are equipped with a diverse portfolio of professional work and the confidence to compete for any number of jobs ranging from editors, reporters, photojournalists, researchers to copywriters, publicists, communication specialists, lobbyists, social media managers, marketing directors, video bloggers and more at public, private and non-profit organizations around the world.

Bachelor of Science in Communication (major)

Broadcast Media

Designed specifically for students interested in pursuing Broadcast Journalism or Television Production. Courses in both fields of study offer students the opportunity to work in front and behind the camera as journalists, producers, videographers and editors, and various technical positions.

Bachelor of Science in Digital Communication and Media (Fall 2017- Summer 2020)

Develop the technical, creative, and business skills necessary to design, develop, market, and manage digital media. Study and explore digital theories, social and global media, web design, and multimedia production.

Effective Fall 2020

Bachelor Of Science in Digital Communication And Media

Digital + Interactive Media provides a foundation for students in data visualization and creating data-driven narratives for public communication. Combining critical and cultural aspects of social media, the degree offers hands-on instruction in web analytics and content creation. Students in this major can expect to take courses in interactive media, motion graphics, digital theories, visual design and more.

Digital Broadcasting students will learn the critical thinking and technical skills needed to produce digital media content and distribute that content across multiple communication platforms. They will engage multiple and diverse audiences through a strong foundation in social media and networking, as well as learn methods and strategies for ensuring their communication attains maximum impact. Digital broadcast majors will learn how to write, shoot, edit, produce and direct video for traditional and digital media platforms.

Digital TV + Multimedia Production allows for a course of study in 21st Century television and multimedia communication. Students gain updated fundamentals in the industry’s best practices as well as training in studio production and writing for television. They will also be exposed to technology-driven facets of the industry, such as motion graphic production, podcasting, social media production and web development.

Digital Journalism gives students the critical thinking and technical skills needed to produce digital media content and distribute that content across multiple communication platforms. They will learn how to engage multiple and diverse audiences though a strong foundation in social media and audience analysis to create communication that attains maximum impact. Students in the digital journalism major will master the skills needed to tailor traditional journalism to a social media audience.

Students will continue to gain experience with traditional news reporting, visual storytelling, and production, electronic news reporting and writing and discussion for television and social media with an emphasis on social, cultural, economic, and political challenges from a national and global perspective.
