The news industry is evolving at lightning speed and Florida International University is ensuring journalists are ready to keep pace.

The Lee Caplin School of Journalism and Media at FIU has announced a new Master of Arts in Advanced News Producing, a graduate program built for journalists who want to level up in their careers.

“This program is about creating leaders for today’s newsrooms,” said Susan Jacobson, director of the Lee Caplin School of Journalism and Media. “Our students will graduate with the tools to produce compelling content and guide teams through the challenges of the digital age.” The program goes beyond traditional reporting, focusing on the behind-the-scenes skills that power both broadcast and digital news with innovation at the heart of its curriculum. Courses will integrate the latest technologies ensuring that graduates are prepared to lead in an industry where platforms and audience habits change rapidly. Students will gain experience using emerging tools and strategies that are transforming how news is created and consumed. Alejandro Alvarado, director of graduate programs at the school, emphasizes the program’s hands-on approach. “We want our students to graduate ready to lead on day one,” Alvarado said. “This degree reflects our commitment to experiential learning and cutting-edge journalism training.”

Students will dive into newsroom management, live program development, multimedia and digital storytelling, data visualization and news coverage involving local communities. This exposure is aimed to enhance the skillset in their craft making each graduate a valuable asset and allowing them to confidently join the industry in senior-level production and leadership roles at television stations, digital outlets and emerging media organizations.

The program is set to welcome its first cohort in 2026, with applications due March 1, 2026 for summer admission and June 1, 2026 for fall admission. Students who submit their applications before December 1, 2025, may also be considered for spring admission.
