Experiential Learning

It is the philosophy of the Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media that to engage students in learning, we must look beyond the limits of the classroom. In this spirit, we have developed an experiential-learning curriculum that allows our students to “learn by doing” while immersed in real-world business settings with industry partners.

NBCU Academy Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Fellowship

The NBCU Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Fellowship is a highly competitive program that allows our Journalism + Media students to participate in and help shape a truth and fact-based news process that accurately and fairly represents our diverse global, national, and local communities. In partnership with NBCU Academy, our students will receive real-world insight and mentorship from NBCU News Group journalists, executives and management from editorial and production teams across NBC News, MSNBC, CNBC and Telemundo to work to champion the cause for a more equitable and inclusive journalistic practice.

Univision Student Training & Employment (STEP)

Offered in collaboration with Univision University, The Univision STEP Capstone Practicum Semester provides an opportunity for students to train with journalism and media professionals who manage the day-to-day business of Univision, and to gain on-the-job experience while completing program requirements for their undergraduate or graduate degree.

SFMN Bureau Experience

The Journalism + Media SFMN | Washington and SFMN | New York Bureau Programs are designed to offer students the opportunity to study in one of the most newsworthy locations and media centers in the world while networking with professional journalists, community leaders, and FIU alumni.
