Step Capstone Practicum Semester

Overview

Offered in collaboration with Univision University, The Univision STEP Capstone Practicum Semester provides an opportunity for students to train with journalism and media professionals who manage the day-to-day business of Univision, and to gain on-the-job experience while completing program requirements for their undergraduate or graduate degree.

Job opportunities upon successful completion of this program offer temporary employment with Univision for qualifying students.

Requirements

  • Be a senior, capstone-level Journalism & Media undergraduate student or a Spanish-language Journalism graduate student.
  • Have a 3.0 minimum GPA
  • Be in good standing (academic, personal, and financial)
  • Be fluent in Spanish
  • Previous internship experience a plus, but not required
  • Have a minimum of 6 credits to complete during semester of participation

How The Program Works

There are two main components to the STEP Capstone Practicum Semester:

Formal Classroom Instruction:

During this semester-long, immersive program, students will receive classroom instruction from Univision professionals and executives.

  • An advanced skills curriculum covering the latest trends and innovations in editing, graphics, audio, digital, shooting, scripting
  • Immersive Spanish-language reporting and delivery workshops
  • Professional networking workshops

Hands-on Work Experience (Practicum):

The practicum (internship) portion of the program also runs the full semester and takes place Monday – Thursday between regular business hours. Students arrange their practicum schedule with the Univision STEP Coordinator in either morning or afternoon shifts, and will receive an hourly salary for a maximum time commitment of 20 hours per week.

Students are expected to fully commit to attend all lectures, workshops, and trainings of this program.
