MIAMI – The Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communications is pleased to award the 2019 Junior Woman Scholar Award to Karen McIntyre, Ph.D. The award, given in partnership with Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Commission on the Status of Women, honors a woman junior scholar who demonstrates outstanding research and great potential for future scholarship.

McIntyre, an assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), researches the intersection of media psychology and journalism processes and effects.  She has authored more than 50 conference or peer-reviewed academic papers and is a 2019 AEJMC Emerging Scholars Grant recipient for her co-authored research regarding the role of media in post-conflict development in Africa. Additionally, McIntyre spent the 2018-2019 school year teaching and conducting research in Rwanda as a Fulbright Scholar.

This is the sixth year of the award, named in honor of Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver. Kopenhaver is dean emeritus and professor at Florida International University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The award will be presented on Tuesday, August 7 at the 2019 AEJMC Conference in Toronto, Canada.

The Kopenhaver Center thanks the coordinator and judges for this year’s competition, which were Katie R. Place, Quinnipiac University; Dustin Harp, University of Texas at Arlington; Stacey Hust, Washington State University; Donnalyn Pompper, University of Oregon; Lindsay Palmer, University of Wisconsin-Madison (2018 Junior Woman Scholar Award Recipient); and Summer Harlow, University of Houston (2018 Junior Woman Scholar Award Recipient).
