2026 Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Award Recipient
The Kopenhaver Center is delighted to celebrate Dr. Jennifer R. Henrichsen, Assistant Professor at Washington State University’s Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, as this year’s recipient of the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Early Career Woman Scholar Award.
Reviewers called her an “award-winner-level candidate whose profile combines scholarly excellence, productivity, impact, and future promise,” a fitting description for a scholar whose work is helping the field understand the real risks journalists face today and what those risks mean for the future of journalism and democracy.
Henrichsen’s research digs into the structural conditions and evolving forms of risk that shape journalistic work. Her scholarship has made a genuine mark: more than 30 publications, including three books and 14 peer-reviewed articles in venues like Digital Journalism and the International Journal of Communication, with her findings cited by the U.S. Government and the United Nations and featured in outlets including The New York Times and NPR. She’s shared her work in more than 80 conference presentations and invited lectures across North America, Europe, and Asia, a level of international engagement reviewers specifically pointed to as a highlight of her candidacy.
Beyond WSU, she serves as Senior Personnel with the VICEROY Northwest Institute for Cybersecurity Education and Research, and is an Affiliated Fellow at Yale Law School’s Information Society Project and the University of Pennsylvania’s Media, Inequality & Change Center. She’s a former Fulbright Research Scholar and the 2025 recipient of the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship, the first in Washington State University’s history. She holds an MA from the University of Geneva and an MA and PhD from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania.
