Director of Community Relations | WFOR-TV/CBS4 and WBFS/TV33

Nelly Rubio is the Director of Community Relations for WFOR-TV/CBS4 and WBFS/TV33. Nelly has been employed by CBS since February 1989. During her tenure with the station, she has been responsible for overseeing the station sponsorship of events and campaigns, public service announcements, community and public relations, and ensuring that issues of concern to the South Florida community are brought to the attention of CBS4 News personnel and station management.   In the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, Nelly founded the station’s Neighbors Helping Neighbors disaster relief program. That project evolved into what is now Neighbors 4 Neighbors, a non-profit organization housed at CBS4 that links people in need with those willing to help.

Currently, Nelly is on the Board of Directors of the Education Fund of Miami-Dade, the American Red Cross of Greater Miami and the Keys, the Cuban Classical Ballet Company of Miami and a member of the Big Brothers Big Sister Hispanic Advisory Council.  She served as President of the Neighbors 4 Neighbors Board of Directors; the Board of Governors of the Suncoast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (Emmy); the Board of Directors of Hands In Action/Manos en Accion; the Hands-on Miami Board of Directors; Television Broadcasting Advisory Committee of the Miami-Dade Public Schools. She has served as a judge for the Miami Herald Silver Knights awards since 1989 and mentor for the Emma L. Bowen Foundation for Minority Interests in Media since 2003.

Nelly’s numerous awards for community service over the past two decades include: the Miami-Dade NAACP “Political Action Award” (1992) the Metro-Dade Community Action Agency “Sargent Shriver Award for Exemplary Community Service” (1993), and the J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award “Volunteer of the Year” (1995.) In 1999, Nelly visited Washington D.C. to receive the National Association of Broadcasters’ first annual “Television Service to America” award. The NAB honored CBS4, among all television broadcasters in the nation, for its commitment to community service through Neighbors 4 Neighbors. Nelly was also recognized with the “Crime Watch Media Award” (2000) by the Citizens Crime Watch of Dade County, honored by the Broward County Fair as “First Lady of Broward” (2001), “Woman of the Year in Television” by the Association of Women in Communications (2002), the American Red Cross of Greater Miami Communication & Marketing Award (2003), Miami-Dade Public Schools Partner Award (2003) the South Florida Business Women Awards presented by the City of Hope (2004), the Red Cross Spectrum Community Service Award (2005), the Bill Adams PRSA Lifetime Achievement Award(2005), Suncoast Regional Emmy Awards Governor’s Award (2005) the Champion of Public Education Award from the Education Fund (2006), the Garza Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Arts from the Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami (2006),  Images and Voices of Hope Award of Appreciation for Community Relations (2007), the FIU Medallion for Community Service (2007) the Education Fund Honors Award (2009), March of Dimes Building Our Community Awards(2009), Miami Coalition/United Way of Broward Commission on Substance Abuse South Florida Media Leaders Award (2010), and the  MassMutual Citizenship Award (2011), Hispanic Women of Distinction Latina Pioneer of the Year (2012), the Consortium for a Healthier Miami Dade for her work as part of the Consortium’s marketing committee (2013) and the Media Leader of the Year by the South Florida Coalition Alliance for a Drug Free Community (2013.)

Prior to joining CBS4, Nelly was employed by Taco Bell in Irvine, California, as manager of public programs, Miami-Dade Community College as director of media and public relations, and Jobs for Miami as director of marketing and operations. She spent more than eight years in banking and began her career in community service at the Mission Language and Vocational School in San Francisco, California in 1977.  Nelly graduated from Hialeah High School, Hialeah, FL and attended Miami-Dade College and Nova Southeastern University, Davie, FL.
