Collaborating with After School Film Institute
The Kopenhaver Center and the Lee Caplin School of Journalism + Media at Florida International University partnered with the After School Film Institute, a collective of film and production experts who serve as mentors to middle and high school students seeking a filmmaking career to sponsor an annual film festival and award ceremony hosting over 200 middle and high school students who embrace experiential learning and a shared vision for the art of filmmaking.
6th Annual ASFI Future in Films Festival Celebrates South Florida’s Young Filmmakers at BBC
On Friday, January 31, the After School Film Institute (ASFI), in collaboration with the Kopenhaver Center and the Lee Caplin School of Journalism + Media, showcased the talents of South Florida’s emerging young filmmakers at the Wolfe Theatre on FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus during the 6th Annual ASFI Future in Films Festival.
This dynamic one-day event celebrated the creative and technical achievements of aspiring filmmakers aged 13 to 18. Attendees experienced a diverse lineup of short film screenings, engaging Q&A sessions, and meaningful networking opportunities—designed to inspire and empower the next generation of cinematic storytellers.
Jessica Kizorek, Assistant Teaching Professor for Journalism & Media at FIU, delivered inspiring opening remarks, setting the tone for the day. Sandy Lighterman, Broward County Film Commissioner and President of Film Florida, also shared valuable insights as a featured speaker.
Soon after, the screenings began, showcasing the creative talents of young directors and their captivating cinematic works. At the close of each screening, attendees participated in a unique voting experience, casting their votes for their favorite films using a QR code displayed on the main screen. This interactive feature added an exciting element to the Festival. The audience also eagerly participated in dynamic Q&A sessions, delving into the inspirations, creative processes, and technical aspects behind each film and gaining valuable insights.
The excitement continued with raffle giveaways and prizes generously provided by event sponsors, which helped foster a sense of community among the participants.
