Women in technology have historically been underrepresented, and a clear opportunity for impactful change is in view if we empower women to take on and take charge of the digital world.
Digital transformation is everywhere in both the public and private sectors. Hence, every organization’s success depends on its ability to execute digitally and continue offerings in the technological platforms of the future.
According to the SKILLSOFT 2021 Women in Tech Report, representation of women in technology has lagged behind that of their male counterparts; as a group, the trend of female participation in technology, spans from 7% to 27% in the past 50 years — a minority in tech for decades (US Department of Labor, 2021).
“Through advocacy and education, we can empower women to advance within their careers by embracing tech-related skills and by providing opportunities to upskill so that they may reach their academic and professional goals. When women prosper in the labor force, society wins”, stated Dr. Lillian A. Abreu, Research Associate and Senior Program Officer at the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication.
Fems In Tech is a collective of female students, alumni, faculty, and community partners led by Lillian A. Abreu, Ph.D., Assistant Director | Research Associate for the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication, who aim to advocate for female techquity and bring awareness to the disparities that exist for women in the field of communication and technology.

FIU’s College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) programs and faculty are at the forefront of higher education – incorporating robotics, 3d technologies, new media, volumetric capture, and immersive and emerging technologies – into classrooms, research, creative activities, labs, newsrooms, and studios.
Through an exciting first at this year’s eMerge Americas conference, FIU|CARTA has partnered with Miami-Dade County — under Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s leadership — and the support of her Tech Innovation Team — to integrate student social capital and specialized higher education programming to showcase the intellectual and creative assets housed at the College.
The CARTA + Miami-Dade County booth showcases how its strengthening and expanding public-private partnerships — ensuring that programs are driving the tech, innovation, and creative economy and creating a pipeline of highly-skilled graduates who are both filling and creating jobs
Advancing women into leadership is a goal of the Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication, especially in the field of technology. Female communicators need to keep up with the digital age and metaverse, and failure to do so will only further aggravate the existing disparity that exists for women in the field of communication and technology.
Our goal is to further expand partnerships to ensure we are fostering innovation among students who are pursuing a degree at the College of Communication, Architecture, + The Arts. Bridging the gap between the virtual and physical world – FIU|CARTA is focused on multiplying new and exciting learning opportunities for its students and for the residents of the diverse communities it serves.
