The Status of Women in Communication – 2015

A Benchmark Study

It’s a decades-long discussion that even now has reached no consensus or conclusion: Where are women in the ranks of communication professions? If they’re not leading, where are they and what are they doing?

It’s not that research into the status of women as communication leaders in the United States doesn’t exist. Many communication professions and/or professional organizations that represent professional practitioners in journalism (newspaper, magazine, radio and television), on-line and digital media, advertising and public relations have conducted surveys and reported the results.

But there’s a void in research that looks across multiple professional communication disciplines to provide a broad perspective on women, especially research that offers suggestions or conclusions on women in communication leadership.

In this benchmark study, we will identify and summarize the most current secondary research into and documentation of the position of women in the major professional communication industries. Through the compilation of these data, we will document the need for a comprehensive study of the role women play in this country’s communication professions in 2015, as well as looking at the leadership positions they occupy.
