Barbara B. Hines (Photo)Dr. Barbara Bealor Hines is professor and director of the graduate program in mass communication and media studies at Howard University. She joined the faculty at Howard in 1984 and has served as chair of the Department of Journalism and director of the Annenberg Honors Program. She specializes in courses in writing and editing, public relations, publication design and editing. She serves as coordinator of the journalism internship program.

Dr. Hines has a long career in journalism education. A former high school newspaper adviser, she pioneered a course for high school students in school public relations in 1970, the first to be certified nationally by a state Department of Education. She was assistant dean of the College of Journalism at the University of Maryland and executive director of the Maryland Scholastic Press Association.
She is a Certified Journalism Educator (CJE).

Dr. Hines received her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, master’s degree from the American University and bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
