Partnering with high schools is a critical aspect of university admissions, as it allows universities to identify and attract talented students from various backgrounds, thereby enhancing the academic environment.

The Kopenhaver Center and the Lee Caplin School of Journalism + Media at Florida International University partnered with the After School Film Institute, a collective of film and production experts who serve as mentors to middle and high school students seeking a filmmaking career to sponsor an annual film festival and award ceremony hosting over 200 middle and high school students who embrace experiential learning and a shared vision for the art of filmmaking.
ASFI Film Festival 2025
January 31, 2025
ASFI in partnership with FIU, will hold the festival at the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus. Event doors will open at 9:00 AM with the shorts block screening beginning at 9:30 AM, with a total estimated runtime of 60 minutes, followed by a 20-30 minute Q&A with the audience and participating filmmakers.
This festival is a special event for student filmmakers to gather together and celebrate their films, their present, and their future.
ASFI Film Festival 2024

On Friday, January 26th, the After School Film Institute (ASFI) in collaboration with the Kopenhaver Center and the Lee Caplin School of Journalism + Media, brought together the talents of South Florida’s young filmmakers at the Wolfe Theatre on the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus for the highly anticipated 5th Annual ASFI Future in Films Festival.
This vibrant one-day event served as a platform to recognize and celebrate the creative and technical achievements of promising filmmakers aged 13 to 18. The festival featured a diverse array of short film screenings, engaging Q&A sessions, and valuable networking opportunities tailored to inspire and empower the next generation of cinematic storytellers.

Sponsored by CARTA and community stakeholders the film festival and award ceremony hosted over 150 students who embraced experiential learning and a shared vision for the art of filmmaking.
