Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking ONE Interpretation Member to serve within the Interpretation and Visitor Services Division at Fort Pulaski National Monument

Location: Fort Pulaski National Monument, Savannah, Georgia.

Fort Pulaski National Monument (FOPU) was established by Presidential Proclamation No. 1713 (43 Stat. 1968) on October 15, 1924 and was later transferred to the Department of the Interior as part of the national park system in 1933. The national monument, which sits between Savannah and Tybee Island on the Georgia coast, encompasses 5,623 acres on Cockspur and McQueen’s Islands. Within this setting, the monument contains a broad range of significant resources that reflect both the natural and cultural history of Georgia on the Atlantic coast. FOPU preserves and interprets the 19th century masonry fort and associated landscape that illustrate the evolution of civil engineering and military technology, a continuum of historic resources from colonial times to the present day, and approximately 5,000 acres of nearly pristine salt marsh on McQueen’s and Cockspur Islands in Savannah, Georgia.

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $400/week to offset the costs of food, housing, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly. 

Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or NPS.  

AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 1700-hour AmeriCorps Education Award (~4,266.50) upon successful completion of service hours. Additional enrollment and volunteer service is required. 

Schedule: 40 hours per week for the 52-week long commitment. Schedule will be from 8:45am – 5:15 pm, five days per week. Weekend service is required. The member may request time off for holidays, travel, etc. within reason.  

Position Description: 

Duties for this position can include: 

  • Staffing the visitor contact areas and historic Fort Pulaski 
  • Answering routine visitor questions and providing information and directions to the public 
  • Providing informal interpretation and safety information while roving in the fort and on park trails 
  • Providing guided tours, walks, and talks for the general public and special groups  
  • Assisting with the park’s education program by developing and providing curriculum-based programming to educational field trips 
  • Assisting with public outreach via the development of content for social media, park website, and printed publications 
  • Assisting with special events, including living history events and historic weapons demonstrations 
  • Assisting with outreach efforts in the surrounding communities. 

In the event the park’s COVID-19 Recovery guidelines do not permit in person interpretive programming, an emphasis will be placed on creating virtual interpretive programming.

Fort Pulaski National Monument is currently open to the public and is operating under established National Park Service and CDC guidelines. There is the possibility of remote work on a temporary basis if COVID-19 restrictions limit park access or there is a need to quarantine.  

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. Eligible members must meet standard requirements of completing at least 640 hours and utilize their certificate before the age of 30.

Requirements: 

  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. 
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • This position is funded through the Public Land Corps Act which has specific program requirements.
  • Must be 18-30 years of age to apply.

  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • A personal vehicle is required as there is not public transportation available to and from the park.
  • Must be able to interact successfully with visitors from diverse backgrounds.
  • Must be willing to handle serving both indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Southern Georgia is hot and humid in summer.

Preferred:

  • Competitive applicants can have a degree (or be pursuing a degree) in education, history, museum studies, environmental science, natural or cultural resource management, or other related disciplines appropriate to the position. A combination of relevant education and appropriate experience is also acceptable. 
  • Experience teaching/interacting with children
  • Experience in public speaking, teaching, environmental or cultural education, or interpretation
  • Experience utilizing social media platforms in a professional environment.  
  • Experience with Microsoft Office 365  
  • Some knowledge or the willingness to quickly learn–the history of the United States, including but not limited to the United States Civil War, the American Revolution, Reconstruction, and the history of southeastern United States, especially the Georgia and the South Carolina coasts
