Climate & Wildlife Research Internship

Position: IFAW climate & wildlife research intern

 

Location: Virtual/remote

Term: Approximately twelve weeks with a possibility of extension. Start date is flexible (will depend upon academic schedule).

Eligibility: Advanced undergraduate; recent college graduate; advanced degree candidate/recipient.

CompensationInternships are categorized as unpaid for purposes of Handshake listings, but participants will receive a stipend and/or may seek academic credit if available through their academic institutions.

Students should consult with academic faculty to determine if this unpaid experience will earn credit.

About us: IFAW was founded in 1969 and its driving mission is to save individual animals, animal populations and habitats all over the world. With projects in more than 40 countries, IFAW provides hands-on assistance to animals in need, whether dogs and cats, wildlife and livestock, or animals affected by natural disasters.

Internship overview: The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is seeking a research intern with an interest in climate science and a strong commitment to wildlife conservation. This intern will support campaigns related to climate change and its impacts on landscapes, imperiled species, marine mammals, and community wellbeing.

The successful candidate may be responsible for assignments including but not limited to: performing a variety of research tasks related to climate policy and science (including legal, political and scientific matters); developing literature reviews; monitoring news and events related to the relationship between climate change and wildlife protection; drafting reports, fact sheets, research summaries and analyses, and other informational materials; reviewing and tracking regional and international policy proposals; and otherwise supporting IFAW’s campaigns and mission. 

Schedule: Start and end dates for the internship are flexible. The climate research internship for fall 2022 will begin in September, with a preferred commitment of at least ten weeks and 10+ hours per week. 

Qualifications: Ideal candidates have an interest in climate science and policy, wildlife policy and animal protection (though prior experience is not necessary), and a willingness to learn about how they can make a difference for animals through education, outreach and policy. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in conservation, government relations, organizing, science communication, and/or working at the interface of public policy and science.

Candidates should meet the following requirements:

§ A commitment to addressing the climate crisis and protecting wildlife;

§ Knowledge of and experience with climate science and/or policy; and

§ Strong research and analytical skills related to peer-reviewed scientific publications, policy language and impact, media/communications, and/or related sources/information;

§ Strong written communication skills;

§ Ability to work independently as well as in a team;

§ Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and shifting priorities;

§ Completion of at least two years of undergraduate education;

§ Availability to work either remotely/virtually or in-office (Washington, DC) for 10+ hours per week during the internship term.
