These positions will operate out of the Cape Horn Guard Station near Stanley, ID and work in the continental United States’ largest contiguous Wilderness Area – the Frank-Church River of No Return.
The SCNF Wilderness – Wild & Scenic Rivers program employs Wilderness Rangers and Trail Crews out of several different work locations; North Fork Ranger Station, Challis-Yankee Fork Ranger Station, Loon Creek Guard Station, and Cape Horn Guard Station to manage 835 miles of trails within the 1.3 million acres of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and the Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the Salmon River in its entirety.
· The Cape Horn Guard Station sits at 6,600 feet in elevation on the edge of high mountain wildflower abundant meadows on the northern tip of the Sawtooth Mountains, providing headwaters to both the Middle Fork and Main Fork of the Salmon River outside scenic Stanley, ID. With year-round appeal roaming herds of rocky mountain elk and pronghorn frequently visit the surrounding Wilderness and station areas.
We are looking for individuals that can work in extremely dynamic landscapes and weather, are comfortable carrying heavy loads (backpacks), tools (axes, crosscut saws, brush loppers, shovels) for extended periods of time while completing light to heavy trail maintenance for up to 9 days of self-supporting trips in the Wilderness. Horse and mule stock support (by USFS packer) may be provided.
Wilderness Ranger/Trail Crew Lead (GS-06 – $20.14/hr) – This position will serve as the field lead for three trail crew members and is expected to complete the following:
· Provide and promote a safe and harassment free teamwork environment
· Perform routine Outfitter and Guide Camp Inspections
· Complete trial work and patrol assignments provided by Lead Wilderness Ranger/Supervisor
(Trail work assignments/schedules will be provided and completed using primitive and traditional tools)
· Patrol lakes, rivers, trails, and camp locations within the Wilderness to ensure that visitors understand and abide by the rules and regulations of National Forest System Lands
· Perform tasks as a crew to collect monitoring, inventory, and upward reporting
· Perform restoration work around lakeshores, rivers, campsites, and trails as necessary
· Act as a Wilderness steward; engaging the public to educate them on the best Wilderness practices and “Leave no Trace” ethics
· Will require strenuous physical exertion including backpacking/hiking in rugged/steep terrain, bending, lifting, and carrying supplies, tools, and equipment (up to 60lbs) for long periods of time

Wilderness Trail Crew Member (GS 05 – $18.06/hr)

Schedule of work will either be an 8-6 hitch (eight consecutive 10-hour workdays with 6 days off) or a 9-5 hitch (8 – 9-hour workdays and 1 – 8-hour workday with 5 days off)) PER DIEM is provided each day during hitch (approx. $312 each hitch in addition to the bi-weekly paycheck).
Housing: Wilderness Ranger/Lead and Trail Crew Cabin is on site at Cape Horn Guard Station. Refrigeration and Cooking facilities provided.
