Interested in applying?
Applying to the Landscape Architecture program involves two steps: first, apply to the University, and second submit your portfolio to the Landscape Architecture Department for review by the departmental admissions committee. The Landscape Architecture department admits students into the Master of Landscape Architecture program at different levels depending on degree background.

Degree Tracks
Candidates who possess a baccalaureate degree in any discipline are eligible for the Master of Landscape Architecture 3-Year Track. All MLA 3-year candidates should apply for the Summer Semester. Depending on the candidate’s background, the Department may require 3-year track students to take additional summer leveling courses before beginning studio in the Fall Semester.
Total required graduate credits: 84 credit hours
Total leveling course credits: 9 credit hours
Application Process
Step 1
Application to the MLA 3-year track begins with an online application to the University Graduate School at https://admissions.fiu.edu/how-to-apply/graduate-applicant/index.html. Successful candidates will have earned a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 in their undergraduate degree. The GRE exam is not required. Step 2
Portfolio of creative work that demonstrates creative abilities as well as visual and written communication skills to the department for review.
A portfolio MUST contain:
- A one-page (maximum) statement describing the candidate’s intentions, aspirations, and purpose in pursuing a professional degree in Landscape Architecture.
- A copy of the candidate’s most current transcript.
- Examples of creative work (painting, drawings, photographs, prints, sculpture, mixed media, videos, or graphics design).
A portfolio MAY also contain:
- Studies of buildings that demonstrate your analytical ability.

The deadline for portfolios is January 15th.

Candidates who possess a preprofessional undergraduate degree in planning design, landscape architecture, urban design, architecture, or interior design are eligible for the Master of Landscape Architecture 2-Year Track.

Step 2

Master of Arts in Urban Design – 36 credits
(Not eligible for accreditation by LAAB)
The Master of Arts in Urban Design (MAUD) is a 36- credit graduate degree program that enables students to pursue interdisciplinary studies in advanced environmental urban design. As an environmental design based program, the MAUD combines collaborative design instruction, applied research, and knowledge of urban theory, planning, and economics. This graduate degree is for individuals with a Bachelor or Master of Architecture, a Bachelor or Master of Landscape Architecture, a Bachelor or Master of Interior Architecture, a Bachelor or Master of Science or Arts, a Bachelor or Master of Public Administration. One year of full-time study in residency is normally required. Study abroad options are also available. Satisfactory completion of 36 credits in the following course of study is required.
Certificate in Landscape Architecture
The Certificate in Landscape Architecture offers students the ability to explore the design, planning, and management of regional landscapes. This program is developed to serve graduate students who would like to expand their academic experience with this area of specialized study. Focused on landscape design and development, the certificate seeks to extend students’ skills, knowledge, and critical thinking about the design, making, and managing of existing and built landscape environments. Students who wish to earn the Certificate in Landscape Architecture should contact the Advising Center at the College of Architecture and The Arts in advance of pursuing this course of study.
Portfolio
All applicants must meet University graduate admissions requirements. Applicants to the Landscape Architecture Department degree programs must also submit a portfolio for departmental review that demonstrates the candidate’s creative aptitudes. The design portfolio is evaluated based on a candidate’s demonstrated sense of composition, attention to detail, graphic communication skills, expressive quality, and sense of space, accuracy, and observation.
Deadline
The deadline for portfolio submission is January 15th of each year. Portfolios submitted after this date will be considered if studio space is available. Students who have successfully completed the portfolio review process must also meet the minimum requirements of an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or hold a graduate degree from an accredited institution to be fully admitted in the graduate program. When the academic record is less than 3.0 GPA, the applicant must submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores.
