Barbara Bollini Roca is a Miami based artist who works in painting, photography, and print- making, and tech-art. The Mayiami exhibition is a body of work that is inspired by the Miami River. Barbara has been exploring the Miami River and its relationship with Miami’s surrounding waters since 2009. Aware of the devastating effects of the damage caused by humans to the environment, and her search for origins led her to the Mayaimi tribe. Mayaimi means big water, the name Miami and the Miami River is derived from this tribe, whom lived around Lake Okeechobee in the 17th and 18th century. The artist’s engaging work has an abstract graphic design quality that references the sustainability of Miami’s maritime industry that consists of cargo ships, the port, and cruises, while she continues to follow the Miami River and its history.
Barbara is an MFA student that works in new media, photography and printmaking. Her work represents her interest in materials, process and the indigenous community. Her current works in lino prints of the New River have abstract and graphic design qualities.
