The Burden of the Incommunicable: Artwork by Sybren Renema

Born in Dordrecht, the Netherlands in 1988, Sybren Renema is a Glasgow-based artist, writer and musician. Since graduating with an MFA from Glasgow School of Art in 2011, he has exhibited widely in Europe, the US and Asia. Built upon methodical research and extensive fieldwork, his multimedia compositions engage playfully and critically with literary and historical sources. Recent work has interrogated regimes of knowledge production and the narrative content of objects in the overlapping fields of travel writing, poetry, empire, exploration and music. Veering between the utopian non-places of hallucination and the ‘blank spaces’ of the inhospitable Antarctic, his most recent shows – ranging from the Antarctic Pavilion in Venice to the Fries Museum – have scrutinized the legacies of Romantic wanderers, addicts, and poets. Work by Renema is held in private and public collections, including the AMC Collection, Amsterdam and the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. Renema’s practice has been discussed in Artforum, Frieze, Metropolis M, Monopol and many other periodical
