March 5th, 2020

Main Gallery 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM

In his essay, Nietzsche contra Wagner, Friedrich Nietzsche explains his reasons for parting ways with the composer, Richard Wagner. In the same essay, he lists the names of composers who represent for him the ideal in music: Liszt, Chopin, Rossini, and “Peter Gast.” While the first three composers are well known even today, Peter Gast’s name has faded from musical history. This panel will examine the unique relationship between Nietzsche and Peter Gast, the impact of the 20th century’s upheavals on their intertwined legacies, and the case for giving Gast’s music a reappraisal
