Miami Music Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that uses music as an instrument for social transformation, empowering children to acquire values and achieve their full potential, positively affecting their society through the study and performance of music. Miami Music Project’s vision is to create opportunity and access through music for those most in need, improve the quality of life for children today and ultimately transform their lives, the lives of their families, and their communities. Emerging as a model for music education programs nationally, Miami Music Project offers free-of-charge, after-school programming to all students with no barriers to entry, regardless of race or economic status. As of today, Miami Music Project has reached over 30,000 children and youth across Miami-Dade County, becoming one of the largest socially transformative music initiatives in the U.S. Miami Music Project’s programming is inspired by the El Sistema phenomenon – a new model for social change and a visionary global movement that transforms the lives of children through music.
Designed as an intensive, tuition-free, after-school community music program, Miami Music Project provides hundreds of children from Greater Miami’s communities with most untapped potential with a fully integrated music curriculum, high quality musical training, and opportunities for leadership and social development. The program builds the transferable practical skills needed to improve academic motivation, classroom success and social preparedness, and creates new avenues of cultural awareness. Ultimately, by enriching the lives of individual children and creating a network of stand-alone orchestras, the program seeks to create social change within the communities served.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the President, the Program Director serves as the head of the organization’s educational programming and carries out the implementation of its curriculum with a clear eye toward musical and non-musical, social outcomes. The Program Director will help recruit and oversee the programming staff and the team of Teaching Artists and their professional development; oversee the performance season; cultivate educational and artistic aspects of organization’s programming partnerships, and administer the inventory of programming resources including the musical instruments and equipment.
The Program Director will uphold Miami Music Project’s mission, vision, and core values, and the ideals of the El Sistema philosophy, in order to create an encouraging environment in which staff, teachers, students, and families thrive.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversight and Supervision of Programs
– Oversee successful implementation of organization’s educational programming including its structure, schedules, annual calendar, repertoire and social development activities,
– Oversee broad implementation of program’s curriculum and model, ensure cohesiveness between program sites, yet remain mindful of the uniqueness of each communities served,
– Assist in the design of program improvements, new programs, and expansion to new sites,
– Build systems for feedback on program quality and progress from various stakeholders,
– Foster opportunities for cross-site interaction, learning, and ideas exchange,
– Lead development and cultivation of existing and new program partnerships; assure alignment of goals and mutual support,
– Supervise purchasing, distribution, and inventory of instruments and accessories, and oversee the instrument loan program,
– Oversee program resources and distribution to program sites.
Recruitment and Evaluation
– Oversee and monitor ongoing progress of student recruitment and retention,
– Administer evaluations, data collection, assessment and documentation of the program’s educational components; provide reports and data points,
– Oversee student musical and social learning progress,
– Oversee student peer-teaching and mentoring activities,
– Carry out classroom observations and create structure for feedback to Teaching Artists and staff to allow for fulfillment of goals and continuous assessment of activities, accomplishments, effectiveness, and improvements.
Team Management
– Oversee the cohort of the programming team, including full-time & part-time staff, Teaching Artists, and all contracted personnel,
– Directly supervise the program management team, including site directors and program manager,
– Lead and motivate to achieve organization’s goals while instilling the application of the organizational core values across programs and teams,
– Lead programming team meetings for planning, reflection, feedback, and improvements,
– Lead the efforts of the recruitment of all programming staff in collaboration with human resources,
– Recruit and onboard Teaching Artists,
– Administer scheduling of Teaching Artists and substitute teachers and assure their adherence to organizational policies,
– Plan and implement annual Teaching Artist Training Program and year-round professional development activities to ensure consistent goal setting and achievement,
– Set educational and music repertoire goals and monitor implementation and progress.
QUALIFICATIONS AND DESIRED SKILLS:
– Strong commitment to the mission, vision, and core values of the Miami Music Project and the El Sistema philosophy,
– Graduate music degree required, preferably in music education, arts administration, management, or a similar field,
– Broad orchestral training and experience,
– A minimum of three years of experience in a managerial or supervisory role including directly supervising and evaluating staff,
– A minimum of three years of experience working in the field of music, arts education, and with children and youth,
QUALIFICATIONS AND DESIRED SKILLS (cont.):
– Experience working in community settings with a track record of achieving shared goals and successful program execution with multiple stakeholders and agendas,
– Knowledge and experience in curriculum design, implementation, and evaluation,
– Comprehensive understanding of diverse music education pedagogies and their relation to child development, the culture of children’s and youth orchestras, or community music schools,
– Exceptional administrative and organizational skills with ability to juggle multiple priorities and tasks and manage staff to everyone’s best abilities,
– Excellent verbal and written communications skills with demonstrable ability to effectively facilitate meetings, present publicly, and provide professional business level written information,
– Experience working with culturally, racially, and economically diverse populations,
– Ability to work collaboratively on a team and in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment,
– Strong desktop computer skills at a business professional level: proficient with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Google Suite. Windows OS, CRM software knowledge preferable, ability to learn new technologies and software/applications,
– Welcomes feedback as a means to personal and professional growth,
– Local travel and evening and weekend availability required,
– Valid driver’s license, clean driving DMV record, full insurance,
– Spanish and/or Haitian-Creole proficiency a plus,
– Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs, and will be expected to assist with moving equipment pertinent to general operations.
