Program Duration: October 4, 2021 – April 15, 2022
INTERN WILL LEARN AND BE EXPOSED TO:
This internship will be spread out in two divisions of NPR – 14 weeks will be spent with the team that programs and curates NPR One, NPR’s signature digital platform that uses human curation and algorithm-based personalization to power listening experiences on platforms including mobile apps, smart speakers and more and the other 14 weeks as a reporter and researcher with NPR’s Business News Desk.
With the Business News team, the intern will mostly write news stories about business and economic trends, help reporters with research projects and learn how to schedule and log audio interviews.
And, then, with the NPR One team see how that content gets to the audience and how we can learn from and improve our content based on the performance of that content on digital platforms.
INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work with members of the NPR One team to curate digital audio experiences to appeal to a young and diverse audience. Pitch creative opportunities to highlight NPR’s signature journalism on NPR One-powered experiences.
- Assist with data analysis to better understand audience listening preferences and habits, with a special focus on understanding how stories from the Business Desk perform across reading and listening digital platforms. Find ways to apply that analysis to the programming of digital platforms and content creation.
- Review and analyze competitive news mobile apps and digital experiences to provide insights on the content and features that could help NPR reach a younger and more diverse audience.
- Writes stories about economics and business for NPR.org
- Conducts story research for reporters and editors
- Schedules and logs interviews and events
- Participates in staff meetings and projects as required
- Performs routine administrative tasks
WHO CAN APPLY?
- LOCATION: This internship has the flexibility to be onsite at our Washington, DC office, fully remote, and/or a hybrid version of the two based on the intern’s preference.
- EDUCATION: Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- An interest in the intersection of journalism and emerging technologies and a passion for thinking about and building public radio’s future audience.
- Familiarity with content performance data and data analysis.
- Excellent writing, research, and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently, quickly, and accurately under deadline pressure.
- Candidates should be interested in news and current events, especially business and economic news.
PREFERRED SKILLS
- Strong research skills
- Computer literacy
- Knowledge of NPR programming
- In addition to the regular application items, candidates must upload/attach a writing sample
SCHEDULE
- 40 hours per week around the intern’s schedule
