Program Duration: October 4, 2021 – April 15, 2022

INTERN WILL LEARN AND BE EXPOSED TO: 

NPR’s Distribution division serves as the bridge between public radio program producers and public radio stations, helping to deliver (by satellite and internet) the public radio shows you listen to every day. We are seeking a detail-oriented individual to help us improve our audio capture and distribution workflows through custom software development and integration with 3rd party products such as audio codecs, automated audio QC, and content distribution networks. We have a number of proof-of-concept (PoC) projects that require experimentation, data capture, and analysis to identify tools and techniques for reliable, low latency, terrestrial audio distribution. In addition, the tools must be user friendly and integrate with the existing system architecture. Key areas such as resiliency, cost, scaling, latency, and maintenance must be explored to understand the full scope and impact of various options.

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with the system architect, software development team, and audio engineering team to identify and define tasks
  • Research various low latency terrestrial audio distribution technologies (e.g. I P Based)
  • Implement and verify multiple PoCs t o validate and demonstrate the technologies
  • Integrate results with the existing system and architecture
  • Support the general development of the NPR Distribution system

WHO CAN APPLY?

  • LOCATION: This internship will be fully remote. Must be planning to work from the United States throughout the fall/winter 2021 internship dates. 
  • EDUCATION: Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship. 

REQUIRED SKILLS 

  • Java software development
  • Git version control system
  • Basic networking knowledge (e.g. DNS, TCP, UDP, multicast, HTTP)

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Basic digital audio processing knowledge
  • Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) protocol
  • Ffmpeg and related libraries
  • Content Distribution Networks (CDN) (e.g. AWS, Google, Azue, Akamai)

SCHEDULE

  • 25-40 hours per week depending the intern’s schedule
  • Available t o communicate with the team on weekdays during work hours. Actual work schedule will be determined based on the candidate’s availability and time zone.
  • Available for Daily status report
