Interested in first-hand exposure to media analytics and technology? Consider an internship with the Audience Insights team, which acts as an internal audience and analytics research consultants to all NPR departments.
NPR’s paid Data Engineering internship is an initiative within NPR’s Audience Insights team offering participants:
- On-the-job-training to get familiar with the best practices of modern data engineering processes and standards
- Practical experience designing, building, and maintaining data products and pipelines
- Mentoring from NPR’s Audience Insights team
- Unique insights into NPR’s analytics technologies, audience data, and software systems
- Valuable experience building solutions for an award-winning news organization that can help participants stand out for future full-time employment
Each day you will work with a cross-functional team of brilliant professionals combining business, design/user experience, analytics and engineering expertise, working to push the boundaries of what’s possible, paving the road for the future of news and entertainment media.
RESPONSIBILITIES
With mentorship from NPR’s Audience Insights team, the Data Engineer intern will:
- Work alongside a Data Engineer and a team of digital analysts to build and improve data pipelines and data products that are used to power decision-making at NPR and member stations
- Build analytics tools that help non-technical NPR staff get direct access to essential metrics and data insights
- Familiarize self with NPR’s data pipeline and earn highly-marketable development experience
- Apply strong analytical and problem solving skills to help ensure high quality of NPR digital analytics products
- Provide time sensitive analytics support for NPR’s external and internal users
At the end of a successful internship, the Data Engineer intern will walk away having gained the following skills and experience:
- Building a production-ready Slack bot(s) for delivering insights and alerts
- Utilizing Google Tag Manager to assist with web analytics data collection
- Creating and improving metadata pipelines utilizing Python to interact with NPR and third-party APIs
- Practical experience working with Python libraries used for data science (e.g. Pandas)
- Creation of javascript bookmarklets
- Writing documentation for internal audiences
- Real-world problem-solving and troubleshooting
- Responding to ad-hoc analytics requests
QUALIFICATIONS
Our best internship candidates are passionate about analytics, eager to discover creative solutions to technical challenges, and curious about the world in general. You should be good at managing your time and deadlines, communicating in all ways digital and non, and working accurately – both on your own and with others on our team.
LOCATION: This internship has the flexibility to be onsite at our Washington D.C. office, fully remote, and/or a hybrid version of the two based on the intern’s preference.
EDUCATION: Must be a current student or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship in an accredited Bachelors or Masters program for Computer Science, Computer Information Systems (CIS), Management Information Systems (MIS), Mathematics, or other relevant degree.
SCHEDULE: 30 hours per week with some flexibility around scheduled work hours.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Experience with popular programming languages like Java or Python
- Familiarity with Git or other version control systems
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Desire to learn new programming languages or systems
- Respect for deadlines
PREFERRED SKILLS
- Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g. Google Cloud, AWS)
- Experience with databases (e.g. BigQuery, MySQL, AWS) and database querying languages (e.g. SQL)
- Experience with ETL processes
- Experience with R and/or Python for statistical analysis or data visualization
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g. Google Data Studio, Mode, Tableau, etc.)
- Familiarity with Google Tag Manager or similar tag management solutions
- Understanding of advanced software design principles
