Are you curious? Do you see something happen and wonder why? Do you talk to lots of people and really know how to listen? Are you observant? Energetic? Do you always want to know what’s going on before anyone else does? Do you love news?
Can you communicate – clearly, accurately, in a timely manner, sometimes with humor or great storytelling, always with your audience in mind? Are you passionate about keeping people informed?
If you answered yes to any of those questions, you could be a fit for this job.
Alabama Media Group is a company with journalism in its DNA and innovation as a daily practice, and we’re looking for people who appreciate the same things. Our goal every day is to share stories that reveal new information, explain an issue, exemplify good storytelling (in video or words) or delight our audience. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who wants to regularly deliver news you can’t find anywhere else.
Specifically, we’re looking for someone to do that job in Huntsville, a fast-growing tech hub and Alabama’s largest city. It’s an area known for bioscience innovation, advanced manufacturing, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and the U.S. Army’s Redstone Arsenal. It has been called the “Silicon Valley of the South,” but it’s also home to a growing music scene, some excellent craft breweries, a thriving arts community and myriad outdoor activities.
What’s the beat, you ask? You might focus on local economic development, real estate, growth, transportation and the opportunities and challenges in a city growing as quickly as Huntsville. Maybe you’ll follow the money in business, in government, or in and out of pocketbooks. Maybe you’ll look at systems and see how they work. Certainly you’ll talk with interesting people and share their stories in a variety of ways.
We’ve launched a new daily, digital subscription product in Huntsville and you’ll take the lead in its daily content. The successful candidate will embrace the use of analytics and reader feedback in planning and evaluating the work. You’ll be working in Huntsville, but you’ll collaborate with a team of talented reporters and editors throughout Alabama. Our statewide newsroom has won two Pulitzers in the last three years, and we routinely make a difference in a state hungry for reporting.
This is a full-time job. If you can see yourself in this role, we’d love to explore the possibilities with you. We’re looking for someone who will take this opportunity and shape it for their success and ours. Please include with your resume a cover letter including how you would approach the work. Additionally, please provide links to the five pieces of content that demonstrate your best work.
