POSITION PURPOSE: To create and maintain a positive, stimulating environment for students to promote a culture of learning. Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students. Prepare, administer and evaluate tests and classroom assignments following curriculum guidelines. Guide and counsel students with adjustment and/or academic difficulties, or special academic interests.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Spends a minimum average of 7 1/2 hours per week beyond the hours required of non-supplemented teacher in instructional (including performance) activities with band/orchestra students or in county-wide meetings and events.
  • Fulfills all responsibilities of paper work such as inventory, purchase orders, instrument check-out forms, report cards, attendance, uniform records, music, library records, and rosters.
  • Meets other responsibilities, including presentation of performances, as may be directed by the administration.
  • Plans, accompanies and is responsible for the band/orchestra on trips to concert performances.
  • Accompanies and is responsible for the band/orchestra’s performance at approved civic functions such as dedications and other ceremonies.
  • Meets expectations according to the regular teacher job description.
  • Performs other duties as directed by appropriate administrator.
  • Provides leadership to the booster club and/or parent organization for the enhancement of the program.
  • Will assist in the high school program as indicated by the high school director.
  • Instructs all students on their instruments at their level and to ensure each student’s progress by as much individualization as possible.
  • Presents concerts or programs as directed by the instructional needs of the students and the valid expectations of the community.
  • Selects music for performance which will further the student’s musical technique, understanding and appreciation.
  • Encourages and assists qualifying students in ensembles, solos, and preparation for auditions such as All State and Region Band/Orchestra, All County groups, and music scholarships.
  • Recruits an adequate number of new students in proper instrumentation into the instrumental music programs to ensure its existence and to make continued improvement possible.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
  • Provide developmentally and academically appropriate opportunities that encourage curiosity, exploration, and problem-solving, with flexibility for meeting individual student needs.
  • Plan, create and implement a dynamic classroom environment conductive to learning and relevant to the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Select materials and equipment appropriate for the instructional program.
  • Model appropriate activities and positive behavior management techniques through daily contact with students and classroom staff.
  • Collaborate with other staff in developing plans and sharing best practices to provide comprehensive services to the students and families being served.
  • Assist in ensuring parent involvement and/or awareness in program planning through open communications, parent meetings, conferences, and parent newsletters.
  • Advocate for parents in accessing resources and support services as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with required federal, state, district and school policies regarding documentation and record keeping responsibilities.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES: Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent or other district office administrator as designated by the Superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a valid South Carolina teaching or be able to obtain one within 60 days from being hired.
  • Must be Highly Qualified in the content area or be able to become Highly Qualified within 60 days from being hired.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have completed a program of study in education from an accredited college or university.

  4. Follow all District policies, work procedures, and reasonable requests by the proper authorities.
  5.
