Multnomah County provides low-cost family health and dental care at seven locations under the umbrella of our Community Health Center. We provide care to all Multnomah County residents, including low-income and uninsured patients. In our county, poverty is prevalent among populations experiencing healthcare and health disparities (e.g., racial and ethnic minorities, immigrants, and people for whom English is a second or other language). Over 70% of the patients at the Multnomah County Community Health Center make less than the federal poverty limit and over 40% prefer to be served in a language other than English.

Situated in vibrant Portland, Oregon, Multnomah County has a regional population of over 2 million with easy access to nature within the city and beaches and mountains barely an hour away by car. The area is served by safe, reliable public transportation and is entertained by nearly countless arts, music, and cultural events.

The OHA AmeriCorps VISTA Partnership Project is committed to building a diverse workforce to broaden and deepen our work in the communities we serve. Oregon is also committed to reducing the spread of COVID-19 and this position requires proof of vaccination.

With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, Portland is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health.

This position improves health equity by 1) Integrating community health worker services across primary and dental care and 2) Developing dental oriented patient education. The member will:

·        Develop workflow and training to cross refer primary care and dental services to improve client access

·        Evaluate barriers and areas of improvement for referring dental clients to the Community Health Worker program in Primary Care

·        Review, update and distribute oral health education materials with a health literacy lens

·        Plan and coordinate National Children’s Dental Health month activities

A successful candidate will have an interest in working in health disparities; have excellent problem-solving skills; and can build relationships and communicate in new environments. AmeriCorps VISTA members serve their communities through indirect service. While programs developed endure for years, you will have limited interaction with clients and will either serve remotely or in a professional office.
