Introduction
Help tell about the African American pioneer experience in Kentucky at Living Archaeology Weekend (LAW).
The schedule and length of the project depends on the student’s schedule and how quickly they accomplish the set amount of research. Previous students spent approx. 40 hrs between Sept. and March.
The LAW program, supported by the US Forest Service, brings an immersive experience of Native American and Pioneer technologies and lifeways to Kentucky’s Red River Gorge. This program uses archaeological evidence to inform diverse demonstrations about the area’s rich cultural traditions and experiences. Our program is directed towards 4th and 5th graders, as well as the general public.
Interns will support our program through research and documentation of the African American pioneer experience in the Eastern Kentucky region to be included among the stories of the Native Americans and European Pioneers that have lived in this region for hundreds to thousands of years. Documentation may include a bibliography of relevant work currently available and/or a catalog of archival photos of African Americans engaged in pioneer period tasks and activities (spinning, basketry, farming, crop processing, construction, games, music).
