Director of Worship – Job Description

Purpose

To invite the congregation into the presence of Christ by directing the worship experience of Covenant Presbyterian Church. 

Qualifications

The Director of Worship must be dedicated to Covenant’s mission to make Disciples of Jesus Christ. We are seeking a leader who views this role as a calling to Christian ministry with an authentic heart for worship and the spirit of a coach that develops healthy teams. They must have a broad and varied musical skillset that is capable of leading and teaching a variety of musical styles. They should have a vision for combining the best of traditional and contemporary sacred music into a blended cohesive and engaging style (see our youtube channel @CovenantHuntsville playlists for examples of our current worship). They must have outstanding organizational skills and adequate time available to coordinate a complex program. They must have excellent interpersonal skills to work with a wide range of skill levels, ages, volunteers, professionals, congregation members and other members of staff. Agility and the ability to take direction from supervising pastors are important attributes since the Director’s vision must serve the mission of the church.  

Responsibilities

  • Exemplify the care and love of Jesus Christ to the teams entrusted to your care
  • Cultivate a culture of joy in worship and respect in teamwork
  • Conduct and participate in the music for a blended worship service on Sunday mornings 
  • Conduct all necessary rehearsals and provide coaching as needed for worship teams
  • Participate in services for Weddings and Funerals or arrange for a suitable substitute (an honorarium is provided for such services)
  • Conduct and participate in the music for special services and programs according to the direction of the Senior Pastor, (e.g. Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, VBS, etc.)
  • Hire additional musicians & leaders as needed – particularly in case of absence 
  • Oversee management of program budget and musician payment in consultation with Director of Finance and Administration 
  • Plan music, liturgy, slides & technology for worship with Senior Pastor
  • Supervise paid and volunteer musicians and tech crew including an organist, band & choir 
  • Attend weekly staff meetings with Covenant Staff
  • Coordinate and communicate projects through designated church software
  • Develop the musical worship of young people either by directly leading groups for the weekday preschool, children and youth or by managing leaders for such groups
  • Arrange music for various levels of music literacy (chords, notes, practice tracks, etc.)
  • Engage regularly in the wider life of the congregation to build relationships within the church and in the music scene of Huntsville to build a network outside the church

  • Immediate supervisor: Senior Pastor

Compensation

  • Full Time Hours / $60,000 Annual Salary
  • Paid Time Off / $12,000 in Health Benefits
