A Degree in Music Business

Students are expected to be highly motivated and prepared to take advantage of the many resources the University and School of Music have to offer. The program is structured to have academic courses, music practicums, and internships. The curriculum promotes critical thinking, and prepares global leaders and versatile music business administrators.

Students in the music business curriculum learn the skills necessary to work in the fast paced music industry of the 21st century. The School’s acclaimed faculty, College of Business acclaimed faculty, state-of-the-art facility, and internship opportunities provide the music business student with a well-rounded education with insight into the music industry from a unique global music and business perspective.

 

Certificate in Music Business

The certificate in Music Business affords non-music as well as music majors the opportunity to acquire fundamental music business skills required of the current industry trends and standards. As the fundamental process in music business functionalities int he music business industry seeks to employ proficient, knowledgable applicants in the field of music business. 18 credits. 

Required Courses

Students majoring in Music or any other discipline may minor in Music Business by successfully filling out an application, seeing the Music Advisor, and completing the curriculum with a grade of “C” or better in each course. At least (6) of the credits for the Certificate in Music Business must be taken at FIU.

B.M. in Music Business

The FIU Music Business program prepares undergraduate students to be leaders in the dynamic, global music industry of commercial and classical music. Defined by a cross-disciplinary curriculum, the program combines your artistic and music creative ability with that of the general music industry, while providing the opportunity to obtain business courses and leadership and managerial skills.

Statement of Career Goals

  • This should include your goals in the music industry, why do you wish to study music business, what strengths do you bring to the program, what are your weaknesses relative to the music business?

Music Business Essay

  • This should be a 1000-word (not including references or bibliography) essay, typed and double-spaced using MLA or Chicago style. You may choose one of the following two topics:
    • The LiveNation company has merged with many music affiliated industries. How has this conglomerate changed the music industry? It is important to understand what facets of the music industry this company now holds. Comment briefly on the process of what happened and how musicians are now working with this commercial venture or capitalizing on its merger.
    • The nonprofit sector of the music industry has developed at a much slower rate than the commercial side of the industry for various reasons. Please state your opinion on the business aspects of the non-profit music industry, and the reason for its gradual development. You may chose examples of leadership, management, or artistic direction from international symphony orchestras, domestic (U.S.) symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, music organizations, or performing arts centers with major music programming.

Audition Dates

Qualified candidates will be invited to audition in person at FIU. Organized auditions are held three times per year, but can be scheduled at other times throughout the year upon request. Applicants who wish to be considered for University merit-based scholarships should attend the November audition date. Theory and history placement tests will be given during organized audition days.

Upcoming audition dates include: November 18, 2023 | February 17, 2024 | and March 16, 2024.
