Restructure the CARTA | Office of the Dean To Create Discipline-Focused Vice Deans

To provide our Department Chairs and School Directors with enhanced and comprehensive support, I am requesting authority to restructure the College’s leadership team, redefining three of four positions.

Rather than our existing structure of an Associate Dean of Faculty, an Associate Dean of Cultural and Community Engagement, an Assistant Dean of Students, and an Assistant Dean of Strategic Initiatives, (as visualized below) I am proposing to create the positions of:

  • Vice Dean of Journalism + Communication (Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media and the School of Communication);
  • Vice Dean of Architecture (School of Architecture); and
  • Vice Dean of the Visual + Performing Arts (Department of Art + Art History, Department of Theatre, and the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim School of Music & Performing Arts).

Each newly established Vice Dean position would be filled by a colleague currently within the College who has discipline-specific subject matter expertise with the primary duties of supervising and working directly with the Department Chairs and School Directors within their respective discipline-focused areas.

The Vice Dean will work collaboratively with me and the Department Chairs / School Directors, and will concentrate on enhancing the performance and operations of the identified units in support of the strategic plan’s pillars and focus areas, including student KPIs, recruitment and enrollment management; accreditation, program outcomes, and curriculum; research, creative activities, faculty promotion and development; impactful engagement, strategic alliances, fundraising; brand management (rankings and reputation), facilities management, and budget management.

Goals in Support of FIU Experience Impact 2030

  • Expand excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration;
  • Support the university’s commitment to build a preeminent FIU Experience;
  • Enhance our existing skill-based curriculum, experiential learning opportunities, and our students’ success as measured by the Florida Board of Governors’ key performance indicators; and
  • Strengthen our impactful community engagement initiatives and our strategic alliances with key anchor partners.
