About our Speaker
Dr. Deanne Butchey is currently a Teaching Professor in the Department of Finance, and former Chair of FIU Faculty Senate, Member of the FIU Board of Trustees, and Associate Dean of Accreditation at FIU Business. She currently also serves as the Insurance Coordinator for the State of Florida’s Statewide Course Numbering System, ensuring seamless student transfer across the State University System.
Deanne holds a PhD in Finance from FIU, an MBA and an Honors Bachelor of Arts in Econometrics from Canada’s York University’s Schulich School of Business, together with a general BA in Economics from University of Western Ontario in London, Canada. Her professional experience includes working as a stockbroker at Merrill Lynch and a Financial Services research analyst at Credit Suisse First Boston in Toronto.
Dr. Butchey has a wealth of teaching experience, having held appointments at both York University and FIU. She has also contributed significantly to curriculum development at FIU. Her research and teaching interests include Corporate Finance and Governance, Data Analytics in Finance, FinTech, Behavioral Finance, Accreditation, and Finance pedagogy.
Deanne has contributed to FIU’s initiatives to engage the community in mutually beneficial ways through Service Learning in Financial Literacy. For a course-embedded project, she has been honored with the “Spirit of Service-Learning Award” awarded by the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of South Florida Inc. (RPCVSF), the Miami-Dade Teacher of the Year Coalition, and the Armando Alejandre Jr. Foundation. This recognition honors K-12 and college/university educators for contributing to the integration of service into the curriculum and for making a commitment to connect students through service to help meet critical needs in the South Florida and/or the global community.
Deanne’s passion is for students’ success in their pursuit of career enhancement and lifelong learning. One of the ways she accomplishes this is by engaging the students in multiple ways, the co-curricular aspect of teaching. She is faculty advisor to the FIU chapter of the Financial Management Association (FMA) and the Phoenician Investment Fund. In these roles, she leads students in experiential learning experiences, provides mentorship and networking opportunities with alumni and members of the South Florida business community.
Deanne is also a board member and treasurer of an NGO, EcoWorks International, whose mission is to “foster sustainability, prosperity and self-reliance by bringing critical resources to Haiti’s farmers, entrepreneurs and communities.”
By engaging future generations of FIU’s global community, she hopes to enhance their innovation and creativity skills, incorporate multiple viewpoints, while helping them devlop empathy, resulting in more well-rounded members of the community. In doing this she hopes to bring about the change needed to improve productivity and leave the world better off than we found it, as verbalized by Lord Robert Baden-Powell.
