Bernadette Chung serves as the Assistant Director, Academic Support Services for the School of Architecture, School of Music, Department of Art + Art History and Department of Theatre. Bernadette has been working at Florida International University for over 11 years with her career starting at the MOSS School of Construction for 8 years holding different capacities. She then joined FIU Online as a Senior Instructional Designer for four years and recently joined the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts in July 2018. She earned both her degrees at FIU, BS in Hospitality Management and MS in Higher Education Administration.
Linda Lara comes to CARTA with over 14 years of Academic Advising experience. She started career in advising at Miami Dade College. She then transitioned to FIU’s College of Arts & Sciences in 2008 as an Academic Advisor and was later promoted to Assistant Director of Advising Services at the Biscayne Bay Campus in 2010. She led the advising team and provided support services to the Dean’s Office. She earned two degrees from FIU: BA in Psychology, and MS in Higher Education Administration with a concentration in Student Affairs in 2007. In 2016, she was recognized by her peers and received the Significant Impact on Advising Community and Advising Partner Award. She is an optimistic, well-rounded, compassionate, and versatile leader. She also enjoys mentoring, teaching and leading a group of like-minded individuals who are innovative, and proactive with achieving results. Linda now serves as Assistant Director, of Academic Support Services for the School of Communication + Journalism.
School of Architecture
Cory Fairfield began his career with the College of Communication, Architecture + the Arts in November of 2017 and originally started working for FIU at Onestop Enrollment Services. Cory currently advises students for Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Landscape Architecture Programs. He completed both his Undergraduate and Graduate degrees here at Florida International University and is currently working towards an Ed.D in Adult Education and Human Resource Development. Cory received a B.S. with Honors in Recreation and Sports Management and an M.A. in Disaster Management.
Michelle comes to CARTA with over 6 years of advising experience. She started advising at Miami Dade College – Kendall Campus. She then transitioned to FIU’s department of Politics and International Relations and quickly became the lead advisor of the department. She has two bachelor degrees from FIU: one in Art, with a minor in Art History, and one in Religious Studies. Once she finished her undergraduate degrees, Michelle decided that higher education was her true calling and enrolled in the Master of Science program in Higher Education Administration, which she earned in 2013 from FIU. Michelle now serves as an academic advisor for Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Landscape Architecture.
Maria Calderin was born in Cuba and arrived in the United States with her family in 1961. She graduated from Miami Dade College with an associate’s degree. She worked at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Atmospheric Sciences for 19 years as an Administrative Assistant. From 2010 to 2011, she worked as a temporary employee at the FIU College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts, and then as Office Manager at the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts | Miami Beach Urban Studios since its opening in September 2011. In March 2015, she became the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts’s Office Coordinator for the Student Services and Advising Center.
Department of Art + Art History
Maida has a true passion to change students’ lives through education and has devoted herself to teaching and advising. She joined FIU in May 2011 as an academic advisor for the College of Undergraduate Education and became part of the CARTA family in the year 2013. She currently advises Art + Art History students. Prior to FIU, Maida worked at Miami Dade for three years where she began her advising career in Advisement and Career Services. She earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Havana: A Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and a Master’s degree in Tourism and Marketing.
Daniel Hiram Zengotita is an Academic Advisor for the Art + Art History Department. After earning his Bachelors in Philosophy at FIU in 2014, he went on to pursue and earn his Masters in History (2016). He also works as an adjunct instructor and academic coach in the history department.
School of Communication + Journalism
Nancy Bonny serves as an Academic Advisor for the Department of Communication/ Communication Arts (Fully Online) students. She earned her B.A. in Political Science from Florida Atlantic University. She also earned her M.S. in Higher Education with emphasis on College Administration and Leadership from Kaplan University, and is currently pursuing her doctorate for Educational Leadership and Management. Prior to joining FIU in November of 2017, she had 4 ½ years of experience working at an online university as an advisor working with online undergraduate and graduate students.
Jose Colon graduated from FIU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering and earned an MBA from Keiser University. Prior to working at the Department of Communication, Jose spent five years as an Academic Advisor at the FIU School of Engineering and has over 9 years of experience in academic advising.
Francisco Marrero began his advising career at FIU in January 2007. He currently serves as an advisor for the Department of Communication. Prior to academic advising, he was a coordinator at the Registrar’s Office at FIU. Francisco received a B.S. in Economics from Universidad de La Habana.
Juliette Saint Louis serves as an academic advisor for Communication Arts students. She also serves as one of the advisors for the Haitian Student Organization at Florida International University. Prior to academic advising, she was a graduate assistant for the office of Campus life working for the Student Government Association at Florida International University- Biscayne Bay Campus. Juliette received a B.S. in Business Marketing with a certificate in Customer Relationship Management from Florida International University and a M.S. in Higher Education Administration from Florida International University.
Verónica Van Derdys-Palomo, graduated from FIU with a Master of Science degree in Mass Communication, with an emphasis on Investigative Journalism. She also has a Bachelors of Arts degree in Public Communication and Journalism from the University of Puerto Rico. Prior to working at SCJ, Verónica spent five years as a Coordinator of Testing for Undergraduate Education at FIU and as a Freshman Experience Instructor. Veronica has across-the-board experience in academics for the undergraduate and graduate community, foreign credential evaluation, educational presentations, advising and event planning. She was awarded the High Achievers Award for Outstanding Service and commitment from the Student Government Council at FIU Biscayne Bay campus.
Amy Donaldson performs professional level supervisory and managerial duties in planning, directing, and reviewing the activities and operations within the Student Services Center.
Rochelle Patten earned a B.B.A. in Human Resource Management from Florida International University, an M.A. in Corporate Communication from Baruch College, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in Adult Education/ Human Resource Development. She has been an academic advisor with the School of Communication and Journalism since April 2011. Before coming to FIU she worked in hospitality, travel and tourism, not-for-profit, and recruiting. Rochelle also teaches Public Speaking (SPC 2608) and Strategic Multicultural Communications for the Communications Department.
School of Music and Department of Theatre
Gerry Suarez earned a B.A. in English and an M.M. in Performing Arts Management from the FIU School of Music. He has been working at FIU since 2007 and was first hired by Undergraduate Admissions as an admissions counselor and recruiter. He has also worked for OneStop Enrollment Services and Transfer and Transition Services before finding his home in the College of Communication, Architecture and the Arts where he is currently the advisor for the School of Music and the Department of Theatre.
