The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts presents approximately eight major exhibitions featuring the work of regional, national, and international artists accompanied by up to ten installations sourced from the permanent collection each year. The curatorial team includes curators, who develop exhibitions, write exhibition-related publications, and perform collections research; preparators, who handle the artwork, work with curators to create layouts for exhibitions, install exhibitions, and maintain exhibition spaces; and registrars, who manage contracts and shipping for exhibitions and incoming and outgoing loans as well as condition reporting, artwork documentation, rights and reproductions, collection accession information, and the institutional archive.
Curatorial interns will be a part of this team: researching, and assisting in the production of exhibitions and collections documentation; aiding curators and registrars in coordinating with artists, galleries, and other museums; working with preparators in art installation and collection maintenance, and generally supporting the needs of the Curatorial Department and the Museum as a whole. Past projects have included research and writing to create documentation on artists and artworks in the collection; condition reporting, creating an inventory of exhibition catalogues, researching artists for upcoming exhibitions, and designing and creating print and digital exhibition promotional materials. Interns in this department can expect an average of 15 hours per week.
Applicants are required to submit a 7-10 page writing sample with their application and, if applicable, a graphic design portfolio of 5-10 works.
