Responsibilities
WHAT IS THE WAGE & INVESTMENT DIVISION? The Wage & Investment Division (W&I) serves about 122 million taxpayers who file upwards of 94 million returns each year. Key W&I objectives are to provide high-quality taxpayer assistance, and to enable taxpayers to transact and communicate electronically to file their returns, make payments and receive assistance. W&I partners with private organizations to provide assistance to such disadvantaged groups as elderly and low-income taxpayers.
WHAT DOES WHAT DOES A COMPUTER OPERATOR DO? IRS Computer Operators work primarily in one of our large processing centers. They monitor and maintain the continuity of equipment operations and processing workflow on our large-scale computer systems. Computer Operators analyze, isolate and resolve equipment, program or control failures that don’t respond to standard operator commands. They also perform special recovery activities, assist in testing and installing new systems. They provide support to customers that involve a wide range of hardware and software issues, including setup, data collection, system failures, file recovery, testing, inventory control, and data communications.
As a Computer Operator, you will:
- Be responsible for operating and monitoring consoles and peripheral equipment on one or more large-scale computer systems.
- Monitor mainframe processing and respond to questions and error conditions generated by these systems.
- Prepare problem logs.
- Follow processing schedule and alert lead operator/unit manager to missing input/output media.
If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

This is a physical job requiring you to be on your feet for extended periods up to 8 hours a day in an environmentally controlled space. You must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry 50 lbs.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:
GS-04 LEVEL: You must have 1 year of general experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-03 grade level in the Federal service. General experience for this position includes: Progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular competencies needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. This may be paid or non-paid experience.
OR
You may substitute education for general experience as follows: Two (2) years of education above the high school level (education may have been obtained in an accredited junior college, college, university, business, secretarial or technical school.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.
GS-05 LEVEL: You must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: operation of computer systems used in support of batch processing. media and data flow, and other work requiring comparable knowledge of computer processing techniques. This list is not inclusive.
OR
You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: successfully completed at least 4 years of education above the high school level (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours), have a Bachelors or higher degree, or have 2880 hours of formal classroom training in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.
GS-06 LEVEL: You must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: operation of computer systems used in support of batch processing. media and data flow, and other work requiring comparable knowledge of computer processing techniques. This list is not inclusive.
GS-07 LEVEL: You must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: operation of computer systems used in support of batch processing. media and data flow, and other work requiring comparable knowledge of computer processing techniques. – Tour of Duty: Dayshift: Monday – Friday or Sunday – Thursday 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Swing shift: Sunday – Saturday 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM. Night Shift Sunday – Thursday 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM.
– Length of season is 8 – 10 months.
